Cruise Iceland's port profile lists alongside berths at Nausthamar and Binnakanntur, together with offshore anchorage and tender facilities. The port's 2026 booking data records 66 alongside allocations and 28 anchorage allocations, so both methods are common in practice.

The harbour is close to the town centre, but a tender call adds another stage to both the outward and return journey. Record the landing point and last-tender time before meeting a guide. Do not arrange a tour to start at the ship's published arrival time without allowing for clearance and getting ashore.

About this port

Heimaey is the inhabited island of the Westman Islands, off Iceland's south coast. Choose between exploring the town and learning about its 1973 eruption at Eldheimar, or making time for an uphill walk on Eldfell. A short call does not need an island-wide sightseeing circuit.

Getting Around

For an independent visit, concentrate on the town and a chosen attraction. The port profile lists taxis, shuttles and hire cars; reserve a pickup before arrival if walking uphill or covering the wider island is unsuitable for you.

The Eldfell summit is a hike. If you want an outing with less climbing, make Eldheimar and the town your main plan and decide about the volcano only once you know the conditions and time remaining.

Things to Do

  • Eldheimar: the museum explains the 1973 eruption, evacuation and rebuilding of the community. It is a useful indoor visit in its own right; check the museum's opening information before walking there.
  • Skansinn: the historical site is included in the regional tourism board's Heimaey recommendations. Combine it with a town outing if time permits, using a local map to select your return route.
  • Eldfell: a walking trail climbs the volcano formed in 1973. Keep a firm turnaround time and leave room for the descent and harbour return; the summit should be optional if the weather or your pace makes the plan too tight.

Getting back to your ship

The harbour is close to the town centre, but a tender call adds another stage to both the outward and return journey. Record the landing point and last-tender time before meeting a guide. Do not arrange a tour to start at the ship's published arrival time without allowing for clearance and getting ashore.

Practical Information

Currency: Icelandic króna (ISK). Call 112 in an emergency.

Take suitable walking shoes and an outer layer for an outdoor visit. The Eldfell trail is the strenuous option; Eldheimar and the town suit a less demanding plan.
