Vesturbyggð's municipal port information lists an alongside pier at Patreksfjörður and two anchorages. Cruise Iceland also documents a tender landing. Evidence of normal practice remains thin: three 2026 calls have a published Hafskipakantur allocation, while eight calls have no public landing assignment. The existing mixed classification is therefore retained.
The municipality describes a fenced docking area. Follow the authorised passenger route out. If tendering, record the actual landing and last return boat; the 0.5 km figure is measured from the pier.
About this port
Patreksfjörður is a starting point for the southern Westfjords, but the scenery outside town requires a deliberate transport plan. For a short call, choose between staying in the settlement and committing to one road outing. Látrabjarg and Rauðasandur should not be treated as sights immediately beside the harbour.
Getting Around
A town outing avoids the extra driving commitment. For an excursion to the coast or bird cliffs, arrange transport and the return pickup in advance. The port profile lists taxis as available by prior arrangement and lists no public transport at the port.
The approach to Látrabjarg includes narrow gravel road 612. A driver familiar with the route is a practical choice if you are uncomfortable with rural gravel driving. Judge an itinerary by the complete out-and-back journey, including stops and the harbour return.
Things to Do
- Rauðasandur: the beach is reached via road 614. Choose it for time on the coast, with an agreed collection point and enough room in the plan for the return drive. Do not assume you can add an extensive beach walk to every sightseeing tour.
- Látrabjarg: the seabird cliffs are approached by road 612. Stay behind barriers and back from the edge: nesting burrows can make the ground unstable. Bird presence varies with season, so the landscape should remain part of the reason for going.
- Stay in Patreksfjörður: the settlement extends along the shore between Vatneyri and Geirseyri. A shorter walk through town is the more flexible option if tendering or a limited call leaves too little time for an out-of-town tour.
For a first short visit, select one main excursion. Only combine distant stops when a booked operator has provided a credible itinerary within your ship's return deadline.

Wear suitable shoes for gravel and uneven ground. At Látrabjarg, use a zoom lens rather than approaching nests or cliff edges.
