Overview
Compare river cruises by the shore days they offer, then check how those days connect to the ship. A route name can combine several waterways; an advertised city can also be part of an excursion or a land stay. The selected operator examples below establish concrete routes without implying that every ship follows them.
This overview is a starting point for comparing itineraries. Use the Danube guide for arrival examples and the river-cruise planning guide for questions about gangways, independent visits and changes to a sailing.
Ports in This Region
Several waterways in one journey
Viking’s 2026 Grand European Tour links Amsterdam and Budapest using the Rhine, Main and Danube, with the Main–Danube Canal providing the connection between the latter two river systems. If this is the sort of journey you want, inspect the daily programme for both sailing sections and shore visits rather than expecting every day to be spent on the river named first in the brochure.
For a more focused Rhine journey, the same operator lists Rhine Getaway between Basel and Amsterdam. UNESCO’s Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a defined World Heritage landscape between Bingen, Rüdesheim and Koblenz. The listing concerns that section of the valley; it does not confer World Heritage status on every Rhine port or cruise route.
One region with different starting points
Viking’s France programme separates Paris & the Heart of Normandy, a Seine itinerary returning to Paris, from Lyon & Provence, running between Avignon and Lyon on the Rhône. These give quite different geographical bases for shore visits. Read the excursion description to determine which advertised sights require a coach journey away from the mooring.
For a short call, compare the time available in the destination with the transfer time. A walk around the landing town may leave more flexibility than a distant excursion; the operator’s actual programme is needed before deciding which is feasible.
Elbe itineraries and gateway cities
Viking’s 2026 Elegant Elbe programme is sold between Berlin and Prague and lists destinations including Wittenberg, Meissen, Dresden, Bad Schandau and Děčín. Check the day-by-day transport and accommodation arrangements before booking an independent transfer to the ship. The cities on the itinerary cover a wider travel experience than the vessel’s sailing section alone.
Use the named programme to check the ports, land arrangements and direction together. Confirm the embarkation address before arranging a pickup in either gateway city.
Danube arrival differences
Passau’s official visitor guidance names central moorings and outlying ones at Lindau and Racklau. Vienna’s tourist board identifies Nussdorf and Reichsbrücke as separate river-cruise mooring areas. Both examples show why “close to the city” is inadequate transfer information: obtain the berth address before choosing a walking route, public transport or a pre-booked vehicle.
Choosing a Route
Make a shortlist of the places you most want to see, then mark each as a ship call, an excursion or a land stay using the operator’s detailed programme. Check how much independent time remains after included activities and transfers. Keep any separately booked museum or transport tickets flexible until the shore arrangements are clear.
Avoid choosing solely by river length or the number of countries advertised. Those figures say little about the time available ashore or the effort needed to reach a particular sight.
