Orientation, not a walking route

Ships normally dock alongside. King's Wharf and Heritage Wharf have separate terminal buildings, with different walks along the pier towards the transport area and Dockyard attractions. Both approaches join the central pier leading ashore; the public ferry landing is inside the Camber, beyond the cruise piers. Note which cruise terminal serves your ship before leaving.
The free, wheelchair-accessible Dockyard Courtesy Shuttle circulates among local stops. It is an internal Dockyard service, not a transfer to Hamilton. Its availability is useful if the pier walk is tiring, but arrange cruise-gangway assistance directly with your ship. The official map distinguishes both cruise terminals from the ferry landing.
About this port
Royal Naval Dockyard is Bermuda's main large-ship arrival area, with King's Wharf and Heritage Wharf forming neighbouring cruise berths. An itinerary naming either wharf means this same west-end destination. The former naval buildings now contain a museum, shops and places to eat, so you can spend a useful day close to the ship or travel farther for beaches and Hamilton.
Decide early whether your priority is the Dockyard itself, a beach or the capital. The attractions near the berth are convenient for the final hours ashore; combining distant stops introduces connections that an island map can make look deceptively simple.
Getting Around
For Hamilton, the ferry avoids the road journey around the Great Sound. Route 8 is a road alternative: the Shorelink timetable gives an average 62 minutes between Dockyard and Hamilton. Route 7 follows the south shore and serves Horseshoe Bay; the published Dockyard-to-Horseshoe stop average is 37 minutes, before the onward walk to the beach.
The adult full-distance Dockyard–Hamilton bus fare is BD$5 in exact coins, or BD$4.50 with a token, one way. An adult BD$19 one-day pass covers public buses and ferries; prices checked 2026-09-25 against government fares. The Shorelink app is another way to buy fares.
Taxis and privately operated minibuses offer direct outings. Agree the destination and return arrangements before setting off. For St George's, the public Orange Route ferry is seasonal and its operating days differ from the Blue Route; build that outing around the current timetable.
Things to Do
Explore the National Museum of Bermuda. Inside the Keep, shipwreck material and exhibitions explain the island beyond its beaches. The grounds and Commissioner's House reward a slower visit. Adult admission is BD$20, checked 2026-09-25. The museum website listed a special-event closure on that date; use its visit notices when planning your call. Vehicle access up to Commissioner's House can be prearranged for visitors unable to manage the hill.
Stay around the historic buildings. Browse Clocktower Mall and the Dockyard's art spaces, then have lunch nearby. This is the simplest choice when you want flexibility rather than a fixed return sailing. The Clocktower shops occupy a single level, and the local courtesy shuttle provides another way between stops.
Choose Horseshoe Bay for a beach outing. Use route 7, a taxi or an organised transfer. The bus stop is a short walk from the beach, so allow for getting back to the road before catching the return. The beach has showers and changing rooms; keep time for these and the journey home when deciding when to leave the sand.
Getting back to your ship
From Hamilton, choose a Dockyard-bound ferry that leaves room for a missed sailing; a replacement road journey is substantially longer. From the beach, arrange your collection or identify the Dockyard-bound bus before settling in. After reaching Dockyard, you still need to reach the correct cruise terminal and pass boarding controls. Work backwards from the ship's all-aboard time, rather than treating the last public ferry as your deadline.
Practical Information
Bermudian dollars and US dollars circulate at equal value. Visitor Services is in the Visitors' Courtyard. Take water and sun protection for the open pier and keep shoes suitable for walking, even on a beach day. Retain your ship card and the identification specified by your cruise line.
