Expect to anchor and come ashore by tender. NASPA says larger vessels must anchor and transfer passengers ashore, while shallow-draught vessels can use the main pier. The ability to berth smaller craft does not mean your ocean-cruise ship will dock.

The pier NASPA identifies as the Tender Pier is the middle pier on the town waterfront, beside the separate ferry facilities. Note your ship's actual tender collection point before leaving. If you need help transferring between boats and the landing, discuss your requirements with the ship's team before going ashore; being close to town does not remove the transfer itself.

About this port

Charlestown is the cruise gateway to Nevis, distinct from Basseterre on St Kitts. Ocean-cruise itineraries, including Star Flyer's, call here for the island's small capital, beaches and former plantation landscapes. You can keep a short visit close to the waterfront and museums, or arrange a taxi to Pinney's Beach or the Botanical Gardens. The return tender is the connection around which to plan your afternoon.

Getting Around

Walking suits a visit confined to town. For an outing beyond Charlestown, certified taxis provide a straightforward option; look for the driver's official identification and agree your collection point for the return.

The Nevis Tourism Authority's published tariff lists transfers from Charlestown Port Facility/Main Street to Pinney's Beach's park and beach-bar area at US$12 one way, and to the Botanical Gardens at US$20 one way. These are vehicle fares for up to four passengers; the tariff adds 25% for each extra passenger. Waiting costs extra. Prices checked 2026-10-02; the currently linked sheet is effective from November 2022.

For several stops, the tourism authority lists a two-hour taxi tour at US$80 for up to four passengers, checked 2026-10-02. Set the itinerary and return time before starting. Local buses are another island transport option, but a prearranged driver is easier to coordinate when you want a particular beach or garden pickup.

Things to Do

Charlestown and its museums. Start with the historic streets, then visit the Museum of Nevis History on Samuel Hunkins Drive. Its displays cover the island from Indigenous history through emancipation and independence; the Alexander Hamilton exhibition is inside Trott House. The Nevis Historical and Conservation Society lists opening hours of 09:00–16:00 Monday–Friday and 09:00–12:00 Saturday, with Sunday visits by appointment, checked 2026-10-02. A Sunday call therefore needs advance museum planning.

Pinney's Beach. Choose this for sand and a meal at one of the beach bars. Give the driver a specific establishment or the park as your destination and arrange collection there. Keep your plan simple enough to leave when agreed, rather than relying on finding a return car at the last moment.

Botanical Gardens of Nevis. In the Montpelier area, the gardens offer tropical planting, orchid terraces, fountains and water-lily ponds against the backdrop of Nevis Peak. A garden visit gives a different view of the island from the waterfront. Pair it with a town stop if time allows, with transport arranged back to the tender landing.

Getting back to your ship

Ask your driver for Charlestown cruise tender pier, and return to the collection point identified on arrival. Oualie Water Taxi Facility and Long Point are different ports. Allow for waiting and boarding the tender as well as the road journey; plan around the crew's last-tender deadline, not the advertised sailing time. The ship sets its all-aboard time. Keep the crew's return instructions handy and follow any changes to the landing or tender service. A public ferry to St Kitts is not your cruise ship's return boat.

Practical Information

English is the main language. Eastern Caribbean dollars and US dollars are accepted; carry cash because card acceptance varies. State which currency you are using before paying. Bring water, sun protection and mosquito repellent, and keep your ship card and required identification with you. Nevis uses Atlantic Standard Time; follow the ship's stated time when setting your return reminder.
