The Port of Tallinn operates Saaremaa Harbour and provides two quays for cruise ships and other vessels. This guide covers docking there. Follow the ship's instructions for the passenger exit and vehicle meeting point; a booking labelled simply “Saaremaa” needs the actual harbour name confirmed.

The port's harbour brochure gives 38 km by land to Kuressaare town. That is a town-level transfer distance, not a measured route to the castle gate. A transfer or pre-arranged taxi is the practical basis for a Kuressaare visit; the requested rural bus branch needs advance arrangements for both directions.

About this port

A call at Saaremaa Harbour needs a transport plan: the port is at Ninase on the island's northern coast, while Kuressaare and its castle are a separate destination. For a short visit, choose either a town-and-castle outing or a rural museum visit, with the return to the harbour arranged before leaving.

Getting Around

Keep a town visit concentrated around the castle and its park. For a private transfer, agree the drop-off, collection point and return time before setting out. Reserve part of the call for the drive back and the ship's boarding requirements; the whole time ashore is not sightseeing time.

For the public-bus option, GoBus's Saaremaa information number is +372 529 5603. The municipal transport page lists the standard cash single at €2 one way, or €1.50 one way using a funded Ühiskaart; passengers aged 63 and over travel free. Prices and eligibility checked 2026-09-08. Sadama is a roadside stop on the Tagaranna branch, so the journey includes an approach from the harbour as well as the bus ride.

Things to Do

  • Mihkli Farm Museum: Saaremaa Museum's rural branch is at Viki village. It offers an alternative focus for an arranged island outing. Its regular season is May–September; outside that period, visits are by prior arrangement or during events. Call +372 522 7479 to arrange an out-of-season visit. Adult admission is €8 (seasonal arrangements and price checked 2026-10-15). Some rooms have high thresholds and narrow doorways, so discuss access needs with the museum first.
  • Kuressaare Castle Museum: make the castle the main indoor visit in Kuressaare, then use remaining time for the adjoining park and waterfront. Published 2026 hours are daily 10:00–18:00, 15 May–15 September, and Wednesday–Sunday 11:00–18:00, 16 September–14 May; the ticket office closes at 17:30. Adult museum admission is €13 (hours and price checked 2026-10-15); see the museum's visitor information for holiday exceptions. The castle has steep stairs and high thresholds. Wheelchair access reaches only the renovated basement, and assistance may still be needed.
  • Island landscape: Saaremaa is part of UNESCO's West Estonian Archipelago Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1990. This is a regional biosphere designation, not a World Heritage listing for the castle or a single attraction with an entrance gate.

Getting back to your ship

Keep a town visit concentrated around the castle and its park. For a private transfer, agree the drop-off, collection point and return time before setting out. Reserve part of the call for the drive back and the ship's boarding requirements; the whole time ashore is not sightseeing time.

Practical Information

  • Currency: euro (€).
  • Emergencies: call 112 for police, ambulance or rescue.
  • Planning: save your driver's contact details and the ship's all-aboard time before leaving the port. Check the named museum's hours for the date of the call.
