International cruise ships dock in the cruise area of Old City Harbour. Visit Tallinn places this about 1.2 km from the Old Town. Allow time to walk along your assigned pier and out through the passenger exit at Logi and Rumbi streets.
Note the name of your cruise berth or terminal for the return. Ferry terminals A and D are separate reference points. Directions to a ferry terminal won't necessarily take you back to your cruise ship.
About this port
Tallinn's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, divided between the lower town and the elevated Toompea area. A short call works well as either a lower-town walk with an optional climb or a visit to the Seaplane Harbour museum. Decide which matters most before adding further stops.
Getting Around
Walking saves waiting for a transfer, but the Old Town's climb and uneven paving can shape your day. If the ascent to Toompea would be difficult, stay in the lower town. Being close to the port does not mean the route is step-free.
The port identifies Vanasadam and Linnahall tram stops as about 500 metres from the cruise terminal.
For city transport, Tallinn's ticketing authority lets you buy tickets with a contactless bank card at the validators. Drivers don't sell tickets, and cash isn't accepted for purchases on board. Validate every time you board, including when you change vehicles within the one-hour ticket period.
Things to Do
- Lower Old Town: concentrate on Town Hall Square and the surrounding historic streets. This keeps your visit in one area and makes it straightforward to decide when to turn back.
- Toompea: add the upper town for the castle-and-cathedral quarter if the climb and remaining time suit you. Treat it as an extension to the lower-town visit.
- Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam): an alternative museum visit away from the Old Town. The museum recommends at least two hours inside. Allow for travel from and back to the cruise berth on top of that. Check its opening page; don't assume all museums close on the same weekday.
Getting back to your ship
Getting back: record the ship's all-aboard time. After you reach the port entrance, leave room for the full pier walk.
Practical Information
- Currency: euro (€).
- Emergencies: 112 for police, ambulance and rescue.
- Getting back: record the ship's all-aboard time. After you reach the port entrance, leave room for the full pier walk.
