Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth to the Indian River reception centre in Portsmouth; this transfer advice is for an alongside arrival.

  • Taxi: use the terminal's taxi and ground-transport waiting area to arrange a ride to the Indian River reception centre. Agree the return pickup before setting off. DASPA confirms the terminal transport area.

Cabrits is a dedicated cruise facility within the national park area. Its wooden wharf connects to the reception centre by a pedestrian walkway of 156 ft, approximately 48 m. This is only the wharf-to-terminal connection, not the distance into Portsmouth. Follow the crew's gangway instructions and the terminal exit route.

Arrival can also involve anchoring: SeaDream describes both docking at the wooden pier and lying in Prince Rupert Bay for marina activities. If your voyage anchors, use the ship's briefing for its shore boat, landing and return arrangements. Do not arrange a Cabrits terminal pickup until the landing has been named. Passengers who need assistance should discuss the actual gangway or boat transfer with the ship before choosing an excursion.

About this port

Portsmouth is the northern Dominica cruise call associated with Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth and Prince Rupert Bay. It is distinct from Roseau and from Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. The useful local choices are Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park, a guided trip up the Indian River and time around the bay. Keeping your plans in the north gives these places room in the day without adding a journey to the capital.

Getting Around

For Indian River or a beach visit, a taxi with an agreed collection is a straightforward way to link your landing and the activity. Specify Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth for the return if you docked there; Portsmouth town and the ship are different destinations. Agree whether the quotation is per person or for the vehicle, the currency and any waiting charge.

Dominica's public minibuses operate on a fill-before-departure basis rather than a strict timetable, according to the tourism authority. They are better suited to flexible exploration than the final connection before all-aboard. A ship excursion or prearranged driver is easier to fit around a short call.

Things to Do

Fort Shirley and Cabrits: choose the historic fort and views over Prince Rupert Bay for history close to the cruise facility. Wear grippy shoes and discuss the walking involved when arranging a guided visit; being near the berth does not make the excursion equivalent to staying on the quay.

Indian River: local boatmen row visitors through vegetation along the slow-moving river, giving time to look for birds and iguanas. SeaDream's Indian River Discovery combines the river with a short garden walk and a bush-bar stop, and lists a two-hour excursion duration (checked 2026-10-02). That duration belongs to this particular organised tour, not every independent boat trip. Arrange the road pickup as well as the river outing.

Purple Turtle Beach: the tourism authority includes this beach in its northern itinerary, along with lunch in Portsmouth. Pick it as a relaxed alternative to adding another inland excursion. Its complete Northern Treasures itinerary is described as seven to eight hours including transfers and lunch; select the parts that fit your call rather than assuming the whole circuit will fit.

Getting back to your ship

For an alongside call, return to the Cabrits passenger terminal and allow time to reach the wharf. For an anchored call, return to the exact landing the ship used and work to its last shore-boat instruction, which may precede all-aboard. A river excursion involves another boat journey before the road transfer: tell the guide your required finish time before leaving the reception area. Leave flexibility for both stages and any queue for the ship's tender.

Practical Information

Cabrits National Park and Indian River participate in the nature-site pass scheme. The published single-site pass costs US$5 or EC$13.25 (checked 2026-10-02); reception centres and designated local sellers provide passes. A site pass does not replace arrangements for your boat or vehicle, so ask which charges a tour includes. Official fee information.

English is the official language; the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Bring water, insect repellent and a light rain jacket for outdoor outings. Keep your ship card and the agreed pickup details protected during the river trip.
