Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Roseau Cruise Ship Berth to the Dominica Museum on the downtown waterfront; this summary applies only to the downtown berth.

  • Walk: realistic for passengers comfortable walking off the ship and into town. The museum stands across from the cruise berth, with the shopping district immediately beyond. Discover Dominica describes this direct arrival into the city.

Ships normally dock. At the downtown berth, the pedestrian access walkway connects the offshore platform with the waterfront. The port authority lists an 88 m access walkway; that is the pier approach, not a measured museum walking route.

Getting to the centre — Woodbridge Bay Port to the Dominica Museum on Roseau's waterfront; this is a separate transfer from the downtown berth's walking route.

  • Taxi: arrange a vehicle to the museum or your chosen town meeting point. Discover Dominica confirms that taxis can be arranged across the island; agree the pickup at your ship's designated collection point.

Woodbridge Bay is a cargo-and-cruise berth about a mile north of Roseau, according to DASPA. That describes its general location, not a measured route to the museum. Follow port staff's exit directions. Roseau Ferry Terminal is another distinct facility, so avoid using that name for a cruise pickup.

About this port

Roseau offers a choice between a compact capital visit and an outing into Dominica's green interior. The museum, craft market and historic streets suit a day with little transport; Trafalgar Falls adds a drive and a forest walk. Your berth makes a substantial difference: the downtown cruise pier faces the city, while Woodbridge Bay is a separate working port to the north. Establish which one your ship uses before arranging a meeting point.

Getting Around

Taxis can be arranged for a Woodbridge Bay transfer or a waterfall outing. Before leaving, agree the destination, currency, whether the price covers the whole vehicle, and the return collection. For an independent excursion, retaining the driver removes the need to find another vehicle at the attraction.

Privately operated minibuses connect Roseau with surrounding communities. Discover Dominica's transport guidance says they depart when full rather than to strict timetables, with reduced or absent service on Sundays and public holidays. That makes them less suitable for a tightly timed return to the ship. Their town stops depend on the destination; a service to a village is not automatically a transfer to its visitor attraction.

Things to Do

Museum and Old Market: start with the Dominica Museum in the old post office building, then browse the craft stalls around Old Market Square. The museum provides context for the island's history, while the streets around the waterfront let you make a short visit as long or brief as you wish.

Botanical Gardens: choose the gardens for a change from the streets and a look at tropical plants and baobab trees. They feature in the tourism authority's city itinerary; combine them with the waterfront rather than trying to reproduce its entire day of stops.

Trafalgar Falls: the tourism authority estimates a 20-minute drive from Roseau, followed by a 10–15-minute walk to the viewing platform for the twin falls. Those are separate parts of the journey, not a complete excursion duration. Make the viewing platform your turnaround for a shorter visit; the walk and drive still need to be repeated on the return. Route description.

Getting back to your ship

Give your driver the actual berth name: Roseau Cruise Ship Berth or Woodbridge Bay. A drop-off in the downtown shopping area leaves a further transfer if your ship is at Woodbridge Bay. For Trafalgar Falls, budget for both the walk back to the vehicle and the road journey, allowing room for delays. Use the ship's all-aboard time to set your turnaround; the tourism board's driving estimate is not a return guarantee.

Practical Information

English is the official language and the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Carry small notes, water, sun protection and a light rain layer; use shoes with grip for a waterfall visit.

The published single-site nature pass is US$5 or EC$13.25, including Trafalgar Falls (checked 2026-10-02). Buy it at the reception centre or establish whether your excursion includes it. This is site admission, separate from transport. Official park-fee information.
