Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: Bourg fishing-port landing area to Boulevard des Poissonniers.
- Walk: a realistic village outing once ashore. The municipality's harbour description recommends a harbour stroll. Boulevard des Poissonniers is the village waterfront street; stay with your ship’s instructions for the exact landing.
Ocean-cruise operators include Deshaies in Caribbean itineraries. The municipality describes ships anchoring off the village fishing port, and Club Med explicitly identifies an anchorage call. Expect your ship's small-boat transfer to shore rather than walking down a gangway from a cruise quay.
Take note of the exact landing and the last return tender before leaving the waterfront. Follow the crew's boarding instructions, particularly if you use a walking aid or wheelchair; the ease of exploring the village on foot does not establish whether you can use that day's tender.
About this port
Deshaies sits on Basse-Terre's north-west coast, with a fishing village tucked between its bay and green hills. It suits a modest day ashore: explore the waterfront used in Death in Paradise, visit the botanical garden above the village, or arrange a beach outing. Unlike a call at Pointe-à-Pitre, this is a tender stop beside a small settlement, so the boat transfer is part of both ends of your day.
Getting Around
The waterfront and village streets make a manageable independent visit. The botanical garden and beaches are separate outings, so arrange a driver or join an excursion if they are your priorities. Agree where the return vehicle will collect you, rather than relying on finding a replacement at the end.
The garden operator places its entrance 1.5 km beyond the village on the road towards Basse-Terre. This is a village-to-garden distance, not a tender-pier measurement. Its directions name L113, the Deshaies–Pointe-Noire–Bouillante–Basse-Terre bus corridor. Follow the timetable link in the garden’s directions to establish a workable return before choosing it for a cruise visit; a service along the coast is not automatically a convenient connection with your tender.
Things to Do
Follow the village film locations. Deshaies stands in for the fictional Caribbean setting of Death in Paradise. The tourism board identifies the church, waterfront, marina and the exterior used for the police station among the locations. Enjoy the real village between the recognisable scenes; private premises and filming activity may limit access, so make this an exterior walking visit unless entry is expressly offered.
Choose the botanical garden for plants and views. The former Coluche property contains tropical planting, water features and aviaries. It is a focused alternative to a long drive across Basse-Terre. Adult entry is €18, checked 2026-10-02 on the garden's visitor-information page. That page lists admission daily 09:00–16:30, with the park closing 17:30; fit the visit around your ship's earlier deadline where necessary.
Spend time at Grande Anse. North of Deshaies, this is a broad golden-sand beach backed by vegetation. The tourism board places it about 2 km from the village. Arrange transport if you want to preserve time for the beach itself. Strong waves, currents and a rapidly shelving seabed make conditions more important than the postcard appearance; a shore walk is still worthwhile when swimming is unsuitable.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the landing used by your own ship and join its tender queue before the published last-boat deadline. A visible ship at anchor is not immediately accessible: allow for loading and the crossing. Finish a garden or beach outing with enough time for your driver or bus connection as well as the tender. Follow any revised instructions from the ship if sea conditions change.
Practical Information
Use euros and bring cash for small purchases. Carry water, sun protection and shoes suitable for the tender and the outing you have chosen. The garden lists drinking-water fountains and toilets, including facilities for reduced mobility, but those amenities should not be confused with the ship-to-shore transfer arrangements.
