Ocean cruise ships dock at Pier Mauá, which operates several passenger warehouses along the waterfront. Record your warehouse number and exit, not just the name of the port.

  • Public transport: use Parada dos Museus for the Touring Building through Warehouse 2, or Parada dos Navios for Warehouses 3 to 5. Check the tram's displayed destination before boarding.

Complete the ship and terminal exit process before looking for transport. For an embarkation day, use the check-in building and arrival instructions on your booking. A museum entrance or a point on the waterfront near the ship is not necessarily a permitted passenger entrance.

About this port

Rio can be a good independent port day if you choose its scale carefully. Pier Mauá opens onto the redeveloped waterfront, with a museum and tram connections close to the cruise facilities. Sugarloaf is a separate outing across the city. Trying to add every famous viewpoint and beach leaves little room for traffic, queues or simply enjoying where you are.

A useful first decision is whether you want a waterfront day with flexible timing, or one major viewpoint with a booked admission and a return transport plan. Both can feel distinctly Rio.

Getting Around

The VLT Carioca tram is useful for the centre and onward connections. Pier Mauá identifies connections with the metro around Uruguaiana, Carioca and Cinelândia. Check the displayed direction and destination before boarding; the tram network has more than one line.

The operator's published single fare is BRL 5, checked 2026-09-25. Its current instructions specify a physical or digital Jaé card and validation on board. Sort out the payment method before you travel rather than assuming contactless bank-card payment.

Use a taxi or arranged car for a direct journey to Sugarloaf if that is your chosen main outing. Ask for the actual attraction entrance, and agree the return meeting point separately; reaching a neighbourhood is not the same as reaching a ticketed entrance.

Things to Do

Museum and waterfront: the Museu do Amanhã is at Praça Mauá 1. Build a day around its science exhibitions, the square and a waterfront stroll, with lunch before returning towards the terminal. Check the museum's admission arrangements before committing to an indoor visit. This is the easiest option to shorten if clearance runs late.

Sugarloaf: Parque Bondinho's cable cars connect Praia Vermelha with Morro da Urca, then Sugarloaf. Treat the transfer, entrance queue and cable-car circuit as the principal outing. The views are the point, so consider conditions before buying a non-flexible ticket. There is no need to bolt on another distant attraction to make the trip worthwhile.

A compact centre visit: use the VLT to reach the central area around Cinelândia, then keep the walk local and return by the same system. This suits someone who wants to experience everyday city transport without making a complicated network of connections. Save the correct inbound stop in advance.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the warehouse specified by your cruise line. If using the VLT, match your terminal to Parada dos Museus or Parada dos Navios rather than automatically leaving at the first waterfront stop. Include the walk from the stop and terminal security in your return calculation.

From Sugarloaf, finish the attraction while you still have room for both a vehicle wait and road delays. A booked admission time only controls part of the outing. When time becomes tight, drop the extra beach or shopping stop and head directly to the terminal.

Practical Information

Carry water and choose footwear for a day that may combine open waterfront paving with queues. The cable-car operator publishes accessibility information, but visitors needing assistance should also verify the car transfer and their ship's gangway.

Attraction tickets and metro travel are separate from the quoted VLT fare.
