Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: The walking figure is from the Albert Pier cruise arrival area to St Peter Port's High Street.
- Walk: about 4 minutes; realistic for a town visit, although the High Street is cobbled and the streets beyond the waterfront climb uphill.
- Step-free: the cruise pontoon has a ramp to Albert Pier; its gradient changes with the tide, so assistance may be needed on the slope. Tender boarding is a separate transfer.

Orientation, not a walking route

Large cruise ships anchor offshore and use tenders to reach St Peter Port. Some smaller ships can berth alongside, according to Visit Guernsey's current cruise guidance; this is therefore a mixed-access port. Confirm your own ship's arrangement before setting a meeting point.
For tender arrivals at Albert Pier, the town and bus terminus are close to the landing. Note the return point and last-tender time before leaving. Allow for the return boat and boarding queue when planning your day, rather than treating the ship's sailing time as the deadline for arriving at the pier.
About this port
A town visit gives you more control over a short Guernsey call than an island circuit. Choose between the harbour, a booked visit to Hauteville House and Castle Cornet when its season allows. The climb to the house and the steps within both historic sites deserve as much attention as their distance from the landing place.
Getting Around
The Town terminus is by Albert Pier. Its Town Shop provides journey advice and sells tickets, accepting cash and cards. For buying a ticket on board, take contactless payment: buses do not accept cash on board. The standard daytime fare is £1.70 one way (Buses.gg, checked 2026-09-08).
The operator lists routes 91 and 92 as circuits from Town through the airport, Vazon Bay and The Bridge, in opposite orders. The full circuit back to Town costs £10 return with a one-day pass; the operator gives about 1 hour 40 minutes for the ride, with traffic potentially extending it (checked 2026-09-08). These are onward island outings from the centre, not a transfer into town. Getting off to explore adds waiting time. For a short call, one coastal destination with a planned return is easier to manage than several stops around the island. The operator introduced a revised timetable on 7 September 2026; use its current route pages rather than an older printed schedule.
Things to Do
- Hauteville House: Victor Hugo's house is at 38 Hauteville, uphill from the harbour. The museum requires a booked guided visit; choose a slot that leaves room for the tender return. There are stairs throughout the house and on the garden access route, so check the museum's access description before booking.
- Castle Cornet: the harbour fortress contains museums on the castle and Guernsey's military history, with gardens in its grounds. Its published 2026 visitor period is 25 March–6 September (Visit Guernsey, checked 2026-09-07, subject to change). For a later call, do not plan an interior visit unless the museum confirms further opening. The States of Guernsey's AccessAble survey records steps into the castle and uneven cobbled surfaces inside.
- Stay near the landing: if time ashore is reduced, walk into the town for shops or a meal and keep the pier as your return reference. Avoid adding an unbooked house visit or a full island bus circuit to this shorter plan.
Getting back to your ship
For tender arrivals at Albert Pier, the town and bus terminus are close to the landing. Note the return point and last-tender time before leaving. Allow for the return boat and boarding queue when planning your day, rather than treating the ship's sailing time as the deadline for arriving at the pier.
Practical Information
- Money: sterling is used, including Guernsey's own notes and coins at the same value as UK money. UK cash can be used locally. Spend or exchange local notes before leaving if your next stop is in the UK; acceptance outside the islands should not be assumed.
- Facilities: public toilets, including an accessible cubicle, are beside the Town bus terminus.
- Emergencies: dial 999 or 112, as listed by St John Ambulance and Rescue Guernsey.
- Access planning: a taxi can reduce the uphill approach to Hauteville House, but it does not remove the stairs inside. Discuss any tender assistance with the ship before going ashore.

Can you walk from Guernsey's cruise landing into St Peter Port? Yes. High Street is about four minutes on foot from the Albert Pier arrival area. Expect cobbles in town and hills beyond the waterfront.
Do cruise ships dock or tender in St Peter Port, Guernsey? Both arrangements operate. Large ships anchor and tender ashore; some smaller ships berth alongside. The Albert Pier walking figure applies to tender arrivals there.
