Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: These directions apply to Maseline Harbour, via the tunnel and Harbour Hill to the Bel Air Inn at the village end of the climb.

  • Walk: realistic for visitors comfortable with a steep uphill walk; the harbour has stairs and the roads are unpaved.
  • Shuttle: Harbour Hill Transport's tractor bus, £1.80 one-way per adult, from the harbour tunnel exit to the top of Harbour Hill by the Bel Air Inn; this public service meets scheduled ferries.
  • Step-free: no at Maseline; the landing has stairs and no ramp, and boarding the tractor bus also involves steps.

Plan for a boat transfer ashore. SeaDream's Sark port information describes anchorage around the island's harbours, and its shore programme includes the journey from the harbour up Harbour Hill. This supports preparing for tender access, but does not establish one landing used by every cruise call. Obtain the harbour name and transfer arrangements from your ship before booking anything ashore.

If Maseline is confirmed, Sark Tourism's ferry guidance describes landing stairs, a tunnel and the onward ascent of Harbour Hill. The harbour tractor bus carries passengers to the top of the hill; it does not remove the steps at the landing or provide an accessible island bus network. Visitors needing assistance should arrange it in advance with both the ship and Sark's Visitor Centre.

About this port

On Sark, the journey from the shore to the village can be the most demanding part of a short visit. The island has no ordinary car traffic, but tractors, bicycles and horse-drawn carriages use its unpaved roads. Plan a modest route after allowing for the harbour climb and return, rather than assuming a small island can be covered quickly.

Getting Around

Bicycle hire is in the village, after the harbour ascent. Carriages normally collect passengers at La Collinette at the top of Harbour Hill. Agree the route and finishing point when arranging a ride, and retain time to get back down to the landing.

Downhill tractor buses leave from outside the Bel Air Inn 30 minutes before scheduled ferry departures. Keep your ship's last-tender deadline as the limit for a cruise return.

Road surfaces are uneven and some gradients are steep. Cycling is confined to roads, not cliff paths and footpaths. Walking gives you control over where to turn back, but choose the route to suit the least mobile member of your party.

Things to Do

  • La Coupée viewpoint: this narrow strip of land connects the main island with Little Sark. Treat reaching the viewpoint as a possible turnaround, rather than automatically continuing south or descending to a beach. Check local access notices and conditions first.
  • La Seigneurie Gardens: the estate has a walled garden and other planted areas. Check its own visitor information for seasonal access; ordinary garden admission does not imply access to the house. Guided house and garden visits require prior arrangement.
  • Heritage Room: La Société Sercquaise's collections cover the island's history and natural environment. Ask the Visitor Centre about access for your call before making it the main stop.

For limited time ashore, choose one of these and leave room for the village and harbour return. An onward trip to another island adds a separate ferry journey and is not recommended as an addition to a short Sark call.

Getting back to your ship

Downhill tractor buses leave from outside the Bel Air Inn 30 minutes before scheduled ferry departures. Keep your ship's last-tender deadline as the limit for a cruise return.

Practical Information

  • Money: bring sterling and a payment card, and check payment arrangements for any prearranged transport. UK and local Channel Island cash circulate in the islands; avoid relying on spending local notes later in the UK.
  • Emergencies: Sark's government advises 999 or 112.
  • Mobility: contact the Visitor Centre ahead of the call about assistance. Its access guidance describes stairs at the harbour, steps onto the tractor bus and unpaved roads. Being able to board a ship's tender does not establish that the shore route is suitable.

Frequently asked

Can you walk from Sark's harbour to the village? Yes, from Maseline via the tunnel and Harbour Hill, if you are comfortable with stairs and a steep uphill walk. The roads are unpaved; the tractor bus is an alternative for the climb.

How much is Sark's harbour tractor bus? £1.80 one-way per adult, checked 2026-09-08. Harbour Hill Transport runs it between the harbour tunnel exit and the top of Harbour Hill by the Bel Air Inn.

Is Sark's Maseline landing step-free? No. There are harbour stairs with no ramp, and the tractor bus has boarding steps too.

Do cruise ships dock or tender at Sark? They tender: SeaDream describes anchorage around the island's harbours. The Maseline directions apply only when that harbour is your assigned landing.
