Cruise ships usually berth on the eastern side of Tórshavn harbour. The port says ships use their own gangways. If your ship anchors, its tenders use a landing stage near the city centre. The port requires passengers exploring independently to take its shuttle between the ship and passenger terminal. The port arranges the buses and charges the vessel. Small expedition ships at Molin can obtain a specific exemption allowing passengers to walk.
The port identifies Kollafjørður, 24 km north of Tórshavn, as an alternative when Tórshavn cannot be used, and says it provides shuttle buses to the capital in that case. A Kollafjørður call requires a road transfer into Tórshavn.
Ask the ship about assistance with its gangway or a tender transfer if you need it.
About this port
For a short Tórshavn call, the harbour neighbourhoods offer a manageable focus: Tinganes and the old town, with Skansin as an optional further stop. First establish how you are getting ashore. Cruise ships normally berth on the eastern side of the harbour, and the port has a separate fallback harbour outside the capital.
Getting Around
Concentrate a short visit on the central harbour and old town, allowing time to return through the port or join the tender queue. If using a shuttle, record its town stop before leaving it.
Tórshavn's municipal red buses, Bussleiðin, are free in both directions, checked 2026-09-08. These are separate from the internal port shuttle. Steinatún is the central city-bus hub, a short walk from the harbour. Use the municipality's route information for trips further out. A hired vehicle may make a wider outing more practical, provided its pickup and return are agreed in advance.
Things to Do
- Old town and Tinganes: explore the harbour-side lanes and government quarter without making entry to an office building part of the plan. The tourism board describes both the area's historic buildings and its continuing government role.
- Skansin: the fort stands above the harbour. Add it if the climb and remaining time suit you; keep a shorter old-town route available in poor weather.
- A longer town walk: Visit Tórshavn's central sights guide provides further options, including the Kongaminnið memorial. Choose one extension, leaving time for the return to your berth or landing stage.
Getting back to your ship
Return: the ship's tender deadline or all-aboard time takes priority over any suggested walk. Allow for the transfer back to Kollafjørður if applicable.
Practical Information
- Currency: Faroese króna, exchanged at 1:1 with Danish kroner; the islands use Denmark's coins. Faroese notes are not valid for payment in Denmark.
- Emergencies: 112.
- Return: the ship's tender deadline or all-aboard time takes priority over any suggested walk. Allow for the transfer back to Kollafjørður if applicable.
