Ocean-going ships dock at facilities along the river and estuary. The city-centre terminal has alongside berths near the historic centre. Bassens is a separate industrial port on the opposite bank, while Le Verdon is at the entrance to the Gironde estuary. Pauillac-Trompeloup is another cruise terminal in the Médoc. Use the terminal name in your own arrival instructions.
From a central berth, follow the designated exit onto the public quays and begin exploring on foot. The city's position on a tidal river means that gangway arrangements deserve attention, particularly for passengers who need assistance. Ask about the actual slope and accessible route when arranging boarding assistance.
For Bassens, Pauillac or Le Verdon, arrange the ship's transfer, a taxi or an excursion before relying on a Bordeaux city visit. The port authority gives about 2 hours each way between Le Verdon and Bordeaux, making the return journey a substantial part of the day. Save the transfer's return collection point and departure time.
River-cruise passengers using the Chartrons pontoons have a different starting point: the port's visitor map marks a 15-minute walk along the quays between that pontoon area and Place des Quinconces.
About this port
Bordeaux's historic centre is an appealing place to spend a call, but the name on the itinerary does not tell you how close your ship will be. The central river quays allow a walking visit; an outlying terminal changes the day into a transfer-based excursion. Confirm the berth before booking an independent activity.
The historic city is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as Bordeaux, Port of the Moon. Its riverfront squares and eighteenth-century urban layout are the focus of that recognition, and give a short city walk more substance than simply visiting wine shops.
Getting Around
Once in central Bordeaux, walking works well for a selected circuit of the riverside and adjoining historic streets. TBM operates the urban tram, bus and boat network; use its journey information for the actual stops and any service changes.
La Cité du Vin is a separate visit farther along the riverfront. Its operator identifies tram B and the La Cité du Vin stop as an access option. Allow for travel to the museum and back rather than assuming it is beside your gangway.
A winery excursion should be chosen in place of an extensive city programme. Establish appointment times, transfer arrangements and the return berth in advance. The Dune du Pilat and Arcachon are also separate regional outings, not short extensions of a central walking tour.
Things to Do
Riverfront and Place de la Bourse: Begin with the relationship between the Garonne and the formal façades facing it. The tourist office describes Place de la Bourse as part of Bordeaux's transformation into a classical city. Add nearby historic streets and a café pause according to the time available.
Grand Théâtre and the centre: The tourist office's current city programme includes the Grand Théâtre, Place du Parlement and Saint-Pierre. Choose a compact combination rather than trying to reproduce a complete coach-tour route on foot. An exterior architectural walk is useful when museum opening times do not fit your call.
La Cité du Vin: This is the main indoor option for a wine-focused visit without organising a journey to an estate. Check the exhibition and admission information before travelling, especially if you only have a limited window between port transfers.
A booked vineyard visit: Passengers interested in the wider wine region can arrange a dedicated excursion. Select it with the berth in mind: the port identifies the Médoc as a nearby regional option from Le Verdon, whereas returning to Bordeaux adds a substantial journey.

Practical Information
Use euros; French is the official language. Dial 112 for an emergency. Keep your ship's local contact details and the exact berth address with you.
Consult official attractions and TBM for current openings and tickets. Leave a return margin for traffic when using an outlying terminal, and for port checks even when the ship is central.
