Dunkirk cruise port guide

Dunkirk, signposted locally as Dunkerque, offers two strong themes for a short call: the evacuation of Allied troops in 1940 and the city's much longer maritime history.

Cruise ships dock in the commercial port. The port authority's 2026 guide identifies Quai Freycinet 12 as a cargo quay used for cruise calls. Delta FM's report of 8 June 2026 records Renaissance and Marina calls at this quay, supporting alongside arrival in practice.

Obtain the berth name, permitted exit and transfer instructions from your cruise line before arranging a private pickup.

For a CFC cruise starting or ending in Dunkirk, the passenger reception point is the Pavillon des Maquettes, 2502 Route de l'Écluse Trystram. CFC provides a shuttle between this reception point and the ship. This is an embarkation/disembarkation transfer, separate from a visiting ship's trip into town.

About this port

Dunkirk, signposted locally as Dunkerque, offers two strong themes for a short call: the evacuation of Allied troops in 1940 and the city's much longer maritime history. Its central basins, museums and belfries make a useful town visit; Malo-les-Bains adds a beach and promenade if the transfer arrangements leave enough time.

Choose one principal museum before setting out.

Getting Around

Once in the centre, walking can link the historic basins and central landmarks. For the museum devoted to 1940 or the beach at Malo-les-Bains, compare a bus journey with the amount of walking you want to do.

DK'BUS operates the urban bus network. Ordinary network buses are free (€0 one way), including the DK'BUS 16 city-centre circulator; fare checked 2026-09-08. Its journey planner shows stops, routes and disruptions for trips around town and towards the coast.

If arranging a taxi, provide the port gate or meeting point supplied by the ship, rather than simply asking for the port. Book the return leg if travelling away from the central visitor area.

Things to Do

  • Explore the maritime museum and basins. The Musée maritime et portuaire occupies a former tobacco warehouse at 9 Quai de la Citadelle. Its collections cover seafaring, fishing and port work, including the privateer Jean Bart. The Port Center within the museum interprets the modern port. Historic vessels, including the sailing ship Duchesse Anne, lie opposite; check current access and ticket arrangements before treating the museum and ships as one visit.
  • Visit Musée Dunkerque 1940 – Opération Dynamo. In the Courtines du Bastion 32 on Rue des Chantiers de France, the museum explains the battle and evacuation through objects, photographs and military material. This is a focused choice for visitors interested in the events of 1940. Use the tourist office’s dated visitor information to check opening and admission before travelling there.
  • Look at the two UNESCO-listed belfries. The Saint-Éloi belfry and the town hall belfry are both components of the UNESCO property “Belfries of Belgium and France”. The designation applies to these monuments, not the whole city. Seeing their exteriors can fit a central walk; any tower visit needs a separate check of access and opening arrangements.
  • Continue to Malo-les-Bains. The beach, promenade and seaside villas offer an outdoor alternative to another museum. Make it a deliberate addition with a return plan, rather than assuming the cruise quay opens directly onto the resort waterfront.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro (€), French is the official language, and the emergency number is 112. Retain the ship's contact details and the name of the correct port entrance.

Bring a windproof layer for the waterfront. Museum interiors, historic vessels and belfry visits can have different access limitations; consult the relevant operator if steps or confined spaces would affect your visit.
