Cruise ships dock in the commercial port. Its current cruise information describes berths for vessels up to 240 metres and buses chartered by cruise companies to take passengers towards central shopping and historic areas.
Check the assigned quay, authorised exit and cruise-shuttle return stop with your cruise line. The commercial quay, Gare Maritime for local ferries and Lorient La Base are separate arrival points.
Use the designated passenger route through the working port. If you have booked a taxi or excursion independently, agree a collection point that the driver is allowed to reach. Reserve gangway assistance and an accessible vehicle together if you need step-free transport.
About this port
Lorient's harbour is the starting point for a day about ships, sailing and the city's maritime history. The main choices lie in different places: central Lorient, the former submarine base now known as Lorient La Base, and the citadel museums across the water at Port-Louis. Decide which interests you most before choosing transport.
For a short call, La Base offers several substantial attractions in one area. Port-Louis is another rewarding focus, but adding a harbour crossing and two museums can fill the available time. Trying to include both with the town centre leaves little room for delays.
Getting Around
IZILO operates local buses and passenger boats around the harbour. Its maritime network connects Lorient with places including Port-Louis and Locmiquélic, with connecting buses on either side. Consult the operator's current boat information for the service appropriate to your route.
Summer services can differ from the rest of the year. In particular, do not assume a sightseeing-oriented crossing shown in a summer leaflet will operate on an autumn call. Include the walk between a landing and your destination, along with enough time for a later return sailing if necessary.
For La Base, compare the ship's transfer with an onward bus or taxi from its drop-off. Use the precise destination name: central Lorient, the commercial quay and La Base are separate places. With limited time or several people travelling together, an agreed return vehicle can simplify the outing.
Things to Do
Lorient La Base: The former wartime submarine base has become a centre for sailing and visitor attractions. The Cité de la Voile focuses on sailing, while visits associated with the bunkers explore the site's military past. Choose the activity that interests you and check current visit arrangements before travelling.
Submarine Flore: Flore-S645 and its museum are at La Base. This is a French submarine, distinct from the German submarines associated with the base's wartime construction. Check the operator's visitor information for access requirements before buying a ticket, particularly if ladders or confined interiors would be difficult.
Port-Louis citadel: Across the harbour, the citadel houses the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes and a maritime museum. The former explores overseas trading history through its collections. It is in Port-Louis, not central Lorient; build the crossing or road transfer into your plan rather than treating it as a nearby town-centre museum.
Central Lorient: A town-centre shuttle is useful for an easier outing of streets, shops and a meal. Establish its return stop first, then choose a walking loop that brings you back there without another transfer.
Getting back to your ship
For La Base, compare the ship's transfer with an onward bus or taxi from its drop-off. Use the precise destination name: central Lorient, the commercial quay and La Base are separate places. With limited time or several people travelling together, an agreed return vehicle can simplify the outing.
Practical Information
French is the official language; France uses the euro. Call 112 in an emergency. Keep the ship's local contact details with you.
Wear shoes suitable for harbour walking and take a layer for exposed quays or boat crossings. Museum interiors and submarine access have different physical demands from an open-air waterfront walk. Confirm those details with the operator, and leave enough time for both the journey back and access through the commercial port.
