Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Arrive by tender at Ilulissat harbour and use the Art Museum, just above the harbour, as a nearby town landmark; the Icefjord Centre is a separate outing.

  • Walk: realistic for a short town visit, but Ilulissat spreads out; choose a compact circuit around the harbour rather than trying to cover the whole town.

Plan for an anchor-and-tender arrival: Seabourn lists Ilulissat as a tender port. The harbour pilot also documents Atlantkaj in the outer harbour, with alongside capacity for vessels up to 110 metres.

Keep your ship’s landing and return instructions with you, and arrange tender boarding assistance with the crew if needed. The pilot warns that ice can impede access to the harbour.

About this port

Ilulissat offers two different ways to spend a call: a visit to the Icefjord Centre and Sermermiut on foot, or a boat excursion. The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 2004. For a short visit, choose one main outing and protect time for the return to the ship.

Getting Around

The Icefjord Centre is a separate destination from the harbour. Decide whether to walk through town or arrange a taxi to the centre; allow for this journey in both directions. Visit Greenland describes Ilulissat as spread out and lists taxis and buses as alternatives to walking. The hotel shuttles described by Visit Greenland serve hotel journeys to town and the airport.

Things to Do

From the Icefjord Centre, the Sermermiut boardwalk runs 1.3 km each way. The centre estimates half an hour each way, before stops; this excludes the journey from the harbour. It passes the former settlement site towards the fjord. Stay on the designated route.

The centre’s exhibition provides an indoor introduction to ice and local life. The blue hiking route is a substantially bigger undertaking: the centre lists 6.9 km and four to five hours. It is a poor default for a short tender call. A boat excursion is an alternative for passengers who prefer to view the ice from the water; confirm its meeting point and full return time.

Getting back to your ship

Keep your ship’s landing and return instructions with you, and arrange tender boarding assistance with the crew if needed. The pilot warns that ice can impede access to the harbour.

Practical Information

Money: Danish krone (DKK). Bring some cash as a backup.

Police: +299 70 14 48. Keep the ship’s shore contact details with you as well.

Icefjord admission: The Icefjord Office’s outdoor site fee and the Icefjord Centre’s exhibition ticket are separate. Check the official site-fee guidance and whether any excursion includes admission. Check the centre’s opening information for your date.
