The harbour pilot identifies Kangerlussuup Umiarsualivia between Brennan Pynt and Emmons Pynt. Its passenger approach is for small boats from anchored ships and landing craft. Seabourn lists Kangerlussuaq as a tender port.

Sikuki, the port authority, warns that siltation complicates navigation at low tide and identifies the pontoon and quay as passenger embarkation and disembarkation facilities. Follow the ship’s tender and transfer instructions; an apparently short crossing is not a fixed-duration service. Agree onward vehicle transport from the landing before planning an independent outing.

About this port

Kangerlussuaq is an inland settlement at the head of a west Greenland fjord, with a museum about its former American airbase and access by road towards the ice sheet. Its shore programme needs transport planning: treat a museum visit and an ice-sheet excursion as different commitments.

Getting Around

Within Kangerlussuaq, the settlement extends around both sides of the airstrip. The town bus runs past its stops roughly every 30 minutes and costs DKK 12 one way, cash only (checked 2026-09-08); one stop is outside the airport. This is a town service rather than a documented connection from the cruise landing.

Things to Do

For a limited call, the museum offers a way to understand the airbase buildings and the settlement’s aviation history without committing to a trip onto the ice.

For an ice-sheet outing, choose an organised road excursion and obtain a duration covering the landing transfer, the drive, time at the destination and return. Do not interpret “road access to the ice sheet” as a short walk from the ship. The Arctic Circle Trail towards Sisimiut is a multi-day trek, so it is background context for a cruise visit rather than a town-to-town day trip.

Getting back to your ship

Practical Information

Money: Danish krone (DKK). Bring some cash as a backup.

Police: +299 70 14 48. Keep the ship’s shore contact details with you as well.

If your cruise begins or ends here, use the flight and transfer details supplied for your actual booking; older descriptions of Greenland’s airport network are not a reliable connection plan.
