Cruise ships berth alongside at Banchina Todaro. Local shipping agent Naviservice identifies sections T1 and T2 for cruise and commercial vessels. Keep the assigned quay and passenger-exit details supplied on board.

The harbour adjoins the town, but a berth inside a working port is not the same as stepping directly onto a shopping street. The port access regulation identifies pedestrian gates between Via Empedocle and Banchina Nord and between Via Gioeni's parking area and Molo Crispi; follow the authorised passenger route from Todaro.

For an excursion, ask where the driver or coach will meet you and where it will return you. Keep the berth or meeting-point details, rather than simply asking to be taken back to “the port”.

About this port

Porto Empedocle is Agrigento's coastal gateway on southern Sicily. The working harbour and the town's literary connections offer a local visit, while the archaeological area of Agrigento is the principal excursion for passengers interested in ancient history. Decide between a substantial temple visit and a relaxed town outing before committing to transport.

The port authority describes Porto Empedocle's development from the maritime outlet of the Agrigento hinterland and its connection with the grain trade. It also highlights the town's associations with Andrea Camilleri and Luigi Pirandello. Those literary links give a local walk another theme beyond the waterfront.

Getting Around

Once outside the operational port area, a local walk is the simplest option. Agrigento and its archaeological park require a separate inland journey; the modern city centre and the temple entrances are different destinations.

A pre-arranged taxi, car with driver or ship excursion is the clearest way to organise a short temple visit. Tell your driver which entrance you want: Giunone on Via Panoramica dei Templi, or Porta V at Contrada Sant'Anna / Via Caduti di Marzabotto. Agree the collection point, waiting arrangements and total price. Do not assume there is a direct public service from the pier to the temple entrance.

You can walk from Giunone through the temples to Porta V, or walk from Giunone to the Temple of Concordia and retrace your steps for a shorter outing. If you'd like to finish at a different entrance, arrange that collection with your driver in advance. Allow time for the walk as well as the road journey. Do not assume that any internal visitor transport is included in admission.

Things to Do

Visit the Valley of the Temples. UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Area of Agrigento in 1997. The remains belong to ancient Akragas and include major Doric temples, alongside evidence of the wider ancient city. Give the archaeology the main part of your shore time rather than squeezing it between several distant stops.

Use the official ticket page for prices on your visit date and the park's opening-information page for opening arrangements. Wear shoes suitable for outdoor paths and take water and sun protection. Plan a shorter route if sustained walking in exposed conditions is unsuitable for your group.

Stay in Porto Empedocle. The Torre di Carlo V is the town's principal historic landmark. A walk around the centre and a meal make a less complicated alternative to travelling inland. Treat an interior tower visit as conditional on locally confirmed access, rather than a guaranteed museum stop.

Getting back to your ship

For an excursion, ask where the driver or coach will meet you and where it will return you. Keep the berth or meeting-point details, rather than simply asking to be taken back to “the port”.

Practical Information

Italian is the local language and the currency is the euro. Call 112 in an emergency. Keep your ship's contact details and allow time for security or an internal port transfer when returning.

Review individual opening hours and restaurant menus. The park publishes current admission and seasonal evening-opening arrangements on its official site. Carry water before leaving town, especially if the archaeological park is your main destination.

Frequently asked

Can you walk from Porto Empedocle cruise berth into town? Yes, in normal daytime operations. Banchina Todaro is inside a working harbour, so follow the authorised route to one of the port's pedestrian gates.

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Porto Empedocle? They dock. Banchina Todaro sections T1 and T2 are used by cruise and commercial vessels.

How do you reach the Valley of the Temples from Porto Empedocle? By a pre-arranged taxi, car with driver or ship excursion. The archaeological park is a separate inland destination, and the temple entrances are not in Agrigento's modern centre.

What can you see without leaving Porto Empedocle? The Torre di Carlo V, the town centre and the waterfront make a simpler alternative to the inland archaeological excursion.
