Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: From Messina's city-facing cruise area at Banchina I Settembre, head for the cathedral in Piazza del Duomo.

  • Walk: about 10 minutes to the cathedral. It's a realistic walk to do independently once you've left by the berth's passenger exit. The walking time comes from Royal Caribbean's Messina port advice; the port authority describes the city sights as reachable on foot from the cruise quays.

Cruise ships dock alongside. The Strait port authority lists passenger facilities on Banchina I Settembre, opposite the city centre, and includes Marconi and Vespri–Colapesce among the cruise quays. Your exit depends on where the ship is berthed, so follow the signed passenger route and note which gate you'll need on the way back.

The authority says you can reach the city sights on foot from the cruise area and lists terminal assistance for passengers with disabilities. Arrange any assistance through your ship before you arrive.

About this port

Messina's cathedral and animated clock give you a focus for a city visit close to the cruise quays. Stay in town and you'll have more time for a museum or a meal. Taormina is a separate excursion: getting back means both the connection down from the hill town and the intercity journey.

Getting Around

For a short visit, you can stay around the cathedral and nearby city streets. If you've more time in the city, plan a separate transport trip to the Regional Museum. Do not rely on the tram: ATM's notice of 2 August 2026, checked on 7 September, says tram services are suspended for long-term modernisation work. You could take a taxi to the museum and arrange a return pickup.

For Taormina, Trenitalia's official connection takes you by regional train to Taormina-Giardini, then by bus from the station forecourt to the town. The combined destination is Taormina Centro. Check that there's a suitable departure from Messina, then count back from the ship's deadline, allowing for both the return bus and train. A ticket to Taormina-Giardini alone won't get you into the hill town.

If those connections leave you little spare time, stay in Messina or book an excursion with a clearly stated pickup and return. Don't try to add a city museum visit to a tightly timed Taormina day.

Things to Do

  • Cathedral square: see the cathedral exterior and astronomical clock. The municipal tourism site lists the main mechanical display at noon (checked 2026-09-07; confirm locally in case of maintenance). Plan around all-aboard; don't delay your return to see the display.
  • A short architectural walk: add the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele at Piazza Antonello or the Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani. Either gives you a more flexible city plan than booking several interiors.
  • Regional Museum: make this your main visit if you'd like to see works by Antonello da Messina and Caravaggio. Check the opening arrangements and transport before you leave the central area.
  • Taormina: focus on the ancient theatre and town centre. Remember to plan the connection back to the railway station, too.

Getting back to your ship

If those connections leave you little spare time, stay in Messina or book an excursion with a clearly stated pickup and return. Don't try to add a city museum visit to a tightly timed Taormina day.

Practical Information

Italy uses the euro, and Italian is the official language. Call 112 in an emergency.

Getting back: save the ship's berth and gate instructions before you go ashore.

The walk from a quay, a museum visit and a hill-town excursion have different mobility demands. If you need assistance, agree the full route and vehicle arrangements in advance.
