Cruise ships dock in the port. Catania Cruise Port gives its passenger-terminal address as Sporgente Centrale. Follow the assigned berth's passenger exit towards the city.

Taxis are available at the terminal. Use the ship's arrival instructions for the controlled port exit: the operator's FAQ directs passengers onto a shuttle, while its technical page says there is no shuttle service.

Port assistance covers boarding, disembarkation and movement around the terminal. Include your ship's gangway requirements in the booking.

About this port

Catania offers a city walk from its port area or a separate excursion to Etna. For limited time ashore, focus on the squares and streets around Piazza del Duomo. Parts of the city form a component of UNESCO's Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto; this does not designate every building in Catania.

Getting Around

A short city visit can use Piazza del Duomo as a starting and return reference, adding a stretch of Via Etnea or one interior such as the Roman Theatre. Decide the turnaround point before walking farther inland. A taxi can reduce the outward walk, but arrange where to meet it for the return to your passenger entrance.

Treat Etna as the day's main outing, with an agreed return transfer. Ask which visitor area the excursion actually reaches and what happens if access changes. Etna Park explains that municipal orders regulate the permitted elevations and when a guide is required. A booked excursion does not guarantee access to the summit.

Things to Do

  • Roman Theatre: archaeological remains set within the later city; check admission before committing time to the interior.
  • Piazza del Duomo: the cathedral square and Elephant Fountain provide a compact starting point.
  • Via Etnea: a shopping street with Baroque buildings; walk only as far as your return margin allows.
  • Mount Etna: an active volcano with its own UNESCO inscription, distinct from Catania's Baroque designation.

Practical Information

Italy uses the euro; Italian is the official EU language. Call 112 in an emergency. For an Etna visit, ask the excursion provider about footwear, clothing, walking demands and current access restrictions. Keep a city plan available if the mountain outing cannot operate.
