Arrival & Getting Ashore
Great Harbour: The BVI Ports Authority identifies a smaller passenger wharf, Jetty No. 2, used by cruise tenders as well as ferries and dinghies. The ship remains offshore while passengers come ashore by boat. Once landed in Great Harbour, you can explore the village waterfront on foot. Windstar also describes its ships anchoring in Great Harbour.
White Bay: SeaDream also operates calls off White Bay, with shore activities centred on the beach. Follow the crew's instructions for that day's boat transfer and meeting place. A beach event offered on one voyage is not automatically part of another cruise line's visit.
Do not use a generic “Jost van Dyke ferry dock” as your return instruction. Note both the bay and the actual landing before heading away. Passengers who need assistance should discuss the tender and any beach access with the ship; the existence of a wharf at Great Harbour says nothing about a White Bay landing.
About this port
Jost van Dyke suits a beach day, a waterfront lunch or an organised snorkelling trip. Great Harbour has the village waterfront and Foxy's; White Bay has the beach and Soggy Dollar Bar. Both appear in ocean-cruise operators' programmes, but they are different arrival areas. Knowing which one your ship uses matters more than choosing a long list of attractions.
Keep the plan modest. Time spent transferring between bays comes out of your beach time, and the final connection back to the ship is by boat.
Getting Around
For Great Harbour's restaurants and bars, walking keeps you near the landing. Between Great Harbour and White Bay, arrange a taxi or join the ship's organised walk if offered. SeaDream describes a guided hike between White Bay and Foxy's, but that does not establish an easy, level promenade suitable for everyone.
The government cruise-passenger tariff lists Great Harbour to White Bay at US$20 for a solo passenger, US$20 each for two, or US$5 each for three or more, one way. Prices checked 2026-10-02. The passenger-count distinction is substantial: agree it and the return collection before setting off.
Things to Do
Great Harbour waterfront: Choose this for a meal, browsing and a visit to Foxy's without adding a cross-island transfer. SeaDream describes restaurants, bars and bakeries near its Great Harbour visit. It is a useful plan for passengers who want a shore outing without making swimming the main event.
White Bay: Spend your time on the beach, with refreshments at places such as Soggy Dollar. If you arrive directly here, there is little reason to go to Great Harbour simply because it is the main settlement. If you arrive at Great Harbour, make the taxi return part of the beach plan from the outset.
Sandy Spit and Diamond Cay: SeaDream offers a separate motorboat snorkelling excursion from the yacht's anchorage to these nearby locations. This is an outing by water, not a beach that you can add to a town walk. Choose it if guided snorkelling is the priority, and use the operator's stated meeting and return arrangements.
Getting back to your ship
Return to the bay and pickup point actually used by your ship. A taxi arriving at Great Harbour is no help if your last boat leaves from White Bay. For a beach outing from the other bay, allow for the road transfer before the tender deadline. For a snorkelling excursion, establish whether the excursion boat returns directly to the yacht, as SeaDream's published programme does, rather than assuming you will finish beside the village.
Practical Information
Bring a towel, sun protection, drinking water and a bag that protects your belongings during boat transfers. US dollars are used locally. Keep your return fare separate from bar or lunch spending, and take the ship's contact details ashore.
Avoid leaving valuables unattended while swimming. Leave shells and coral in place; UK government travel advice says taking them out of the BVI without a permit is illegal. Plan water activities before drinking alcohol, and follow the crew's instructions if sea conditions change the shore programme.
