Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: Tortola Pier Park's landside entrance to Crafts Alive Village.
- Walk: A practical town walk of about 10 minutes between these entrances, following the terminal operator's walking directions in reverse. This excludes the walk from the ship along the pier.

Ships normally berth at Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park. Walk ashore along the pier into its shopping area, then out through the landside entrance. Follow Administration Drive towards the traffic-light junction and the Crafts Alive area. The terminal's directions identify Noel Lloyd Park and the government complex as landmarks along this approach.
The port also receives ships at anchor and has a tender pier beside the cruise pier. If your ship tenders, use its specified landing and return arrangements. Road Town Jetty, used principally by inter-island ferries, is a separate facility; a ferry ticket or taxi instruction saying merely “Road Town dock” is not precise enough for your return.
About this port
Road Town offers a straightforward choice between a walk around the British Virgin Islands' capital and a taxi outing across Tortola to the beaches. The cruise pier puts you beside the town, with shops and places to eat in the landside Pier Park development. Cane Garden Bay makes a contrasting beach day; trying to combine it with an independent excursion to another island adds unnecessary connections to a short call.
Road Town is the name used locally. It is distinct from West End and its ferry facilities, so use the cruise terminal's full name when arranging transport.
Getting Around
Walking suits the waterfront and central town. For a beach outing, arrange both taxi legs before leaving the terminal. The government's cruise-passenger tariff lists Cane Garden Bay at US$24 for a solo passenger, US$16 each for two, or US$12 each for three or more, one way. Prices checked 2026-10-02; establish the passenger count and collection arrangement before boarding.
The government announced public bus services in March 2026 between Road Town and East End, and between Road Town and West End continuing to Carrot Bay. Vehicles display “Bus Service” and their route. These are useful for travel along those corridors, but the announcement does not establish a cruise-terminal stop or a direct Cane Garden Bay service. A prearranged taxi makes the beach return easier to control.
Things to Do
For a town visit, start with Crafts Alive and continue towards the older streets around Main Street. Leave space for browsing and lunch rather than treating the terminal's shopping development as the whole capital.
The J. R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens offer a quieter stop in Road Town, with palms, shaded pergolas and plant collections representing the islands' different habitats. The National Parks Trust lists admission at US$3 for adults and US$2 for children, checked 2026-10-02.
Cane Garden Bay is the beach alternative, with places to eat along the bay. Make it the main outing if swimming and lunch matter more than sightseeing. Agree a recognisable pickup location before separating from your driver.
Getting back to your ship
Tell your driver “Tortola Pier Park cruise terminal”, then allow for the walk through the development and along the pier. Beach trips involve a road journey back before that final walk. Work backwards from the ship's all-aboard time when agreeing collection, rather than waiting until you are ready to leave the beach to find a ride. At an anchorage call, the last tender time is the relevant deadline ashore.
Practical Information
Bring sun protection and water for the pier and town walk. US dollars are the local currency; small notes help when paying a fare charged per person. Traffic drives on the left. Take care crossing streets even if the route looks short on a map.
For mobility needs, ask the ship about its gangway or tender arrangements separately from the onward taxi. Discuss any need for a step-free route with the terminal as well as the ship before setting off on the town walk.
