Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Killam Brothers Wharf tender landing to Yarmouth's historic waterfront.

  • Walk: a practical starting point for a waterfront and heritage-district visit. The tourism association's shore-excursion plan starts its town walking tours at Killam Brothers Marina. This description applies only when your tender lands there. Source: official shore-excursion guide.
  • Public transport: for onward travel within town, Yarmouth Transit is free for visitors as well as residents; it does not run on Sundays or the town's listed public holidays. This is the town network, not a transfer from every cruise landing. Prices checked 2026-10-02. Sources: town service and operating days.

Expect tendering on the larger-ship call described by Crystal, which marks Yarmouth as an anchorage. The tourism association's official 2022 excursion guide identifies Killam Brothers Wharf as a tender landing and also maps a landing area at Lobster Rock. The exact facility remains a ship-specific instruction.

Lobster Rock Marine Terminal and Old Government Wharf are separate alongside facilities in the port's excursion guide. Do not apply the Killam Brothers walking description to either berth, and do not head for the International Ferry Terminal simply because it is a passenger facility. Save your own landing name for the return.

About this port

Yarmouth occupies the southwestern end of Nova Scotia, with a working waterfront and streets of houses built during its seafaring prosperity. An independent visit can combine a heritage walk with the County Museum; an excursion to Cape Forchu gives you open coastal views and the distinctive lighthouse. Choose according to the weather and your time ashore, rather than treating the lighthouse as part of a short town walk.

This is the Canadian Yarmouth, distinct from Great Yarmouth in England. Crystal includes it on ocean voyages between Boston and Montréal. The CAT ferry also serves the harbour, but ferry check-in arrangements are separate from those for your cruise call.

Getting Around

For the central heritage area, walking gives you control over how much you cover. The tourism association's Heritage in Your Hand route is a 4 km loop on town pavements, with a suggested range of one to four-and-a-half hours depending on stops. That is the sightseeing circuit, not the distance from your ship. Shorten it if you also want museum time.

Town of Yarmouth Transit is free for residents and visitors, checked 2026-10-02. It uses designated stops and a flag-stop system, with exceptions on Starrs Road and parts of Main and Vancouver Streets. Use the town's route map before flagging a bus. The published service excludes Sundays and specified public holidays; it is a town network, not a cruise shuttle.

For Cape Forchu, organise a return excursion or vehicle. The tourism association's cruise plan estimates approximately 15 minutes driving each way in its 2022 excursion guide from Killam Brothers Marina. Allow additional time for collection and sightseeing, and agree the return pickup before leaving the vehicle.

Things to Do

Heritage streets: Download the official walking guide and pick a manageable section of the loop. Its focus on sea captains' homes and mercantile buildings gives the walk a clear theme. Combine the architecture with a waterfront lunch instead of feeling obliged to complete every stop.

Yarmouth County Museum & Archives: At 22 Collins Street, a former granite church houses collections with a strong maritime emphasis, including ship portraits. It works well as the indoor part of a heritage walk. Autumn opening differs from summer: the tourism board lists October–May visits on Tuesday–Saturday afternoons (checked 2026-10-02), so place it later in the day if your call permits and consult the museum before committing.

Cape Forchu: The lighthouse grounds and Leif Erikson Park offer walking paths, benches and sea views. The municipality's attraction site says the park is free and open year-round, checked 2026-10-02. Tower tours are seasonal: the published 2026 climb season ended on 27 September. For later calls, plan the coastal grounds rather than assuming the 77-step tower climb will be available.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the landing named by your crew. Killam Brothers, Lobster Rock and the ferry terminal should not be treated as interchangeable destinations. Work to the last-tender time and allow for waiting at the waterfront. At Cape Forchu, leave time for the road journey before joining that queue; an attractive view of the harbour is not evidence that the ship is close by road. Keep an independent excursion flexible if the tender operation changes.

Practical Information

Bring a waterproof layer for the tender and exposed headland, plus shoes suitable for outdoor paths. Budget in Canadian dollars. At Killam Brothers, the tourism association's passenger-welcome arrangements include washrooms; ask the arrival staff for the day's visitor facilities before setting off.

Discuss tender transfers with the cruise line if you use a wheelchair or need boarding assistance. The town describes its bus as accessible, but that does not establish whether the landing, vehicle collection and attraction route meet your needs.
