Arrival & Getting Ashore

Windstar explicitly describes Playa Flamingo as a wet landing: passengers transfer in small boats and step into shallow water to reach the shore. Prepare for the boat transfer and sand underfoot even if the activity you have booked involves very little walking. The ship's briefing gives the landing position, boarding procedure and permitted time ashore.

Wear footwear that stays secure when wet, and keep your phone, identification and money in a waterproof bag. Discuss any difficulty boarding small boats or stepping into water with the crew before joining the landing queue. A private car reservation does not remove this part of the journey.

About this port

Playa Flamingo is a beach call on Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast, with white sand, coastal boat excursions and a modern marina district. Windstar includes it in its Naturally Costa Rica programme. The most manageable day stays near the coast; inland wildlife, ranch and volcanic excursions require a larger commitment to organised transport.

The beach and the yacht marina serve different purposes. Seeing Marina Flamingo on a map does not mean your cruise ship will berth there, or that your transfer ashore will arrive at its pontoons.

Getting Around

For independent plans, establish the day's actual landing beach before agreeing a pickup point with a driver. Use a return booking for a trip to another beach or an inland attraction. A marina address and a beach meeting point are not interchangeable, and a driver needs to know which one you will use.

Staying in the Flamingo area lets you combine a coastal stop with refreshments without committing to a long inland excursion. The marina's own directory lists cafés, restaurants and shops. Choose a specific business as a meeting point if visiting the development, then arrange the journey back to your landing separately.

Things to Do

Make the white-sand beach the main event. The tourism board identifies Playa Flamingo, also called Playa Blanca, beside Punta Salinas and the Brasilito and Potrero bays. It is a straightforward choice for time on the sand and coastal views. Take local advice on the day's swimming conditions and stay clear of boat movements at the landing.

Join a catamaran and snorkelling outing. Windstar's published programme includes a four-hour catamaran excursion, checked 2 October 2026. That duration covers the organised activity, not unrestricted time to explore afterwards. When comparing it with a private charter, establish whether boat transfers, equipment and the return to your cruise landing are included.

Visit the marina district. Marina Flamingo offers a different setting from the beach: yacht views, coffee and a choice of places to eat. Its directory includes Café Britt and Surfbox, while the shopping directory lists a market and pharmacy. Allow for a separate journey from wherever the cruise crew puts you ashore; the marina is a destination, not a confirmed cruise terminal.

Getting back to your ship

Return to the landing designated by your own ship. The final boat time matters as well as all-aboard, and returning passengers may need to wait their turn to board. Set your private driver's collection time around that boat connection rather than around the ship's sailing time. For an independent catamaran outing, require a return that leaves time to reach the cruise landing; a sunset trip may not fit the call.

Practical Information

Pack for the landing first: sun protection, drinking water, a towel and dry footwear if your excursion continues inland. For snorkelling, establish the operator's swimming requirements and how you reboard the boat before booking. Follow the crew's advice if visibility or sea conditions change the activity.

Costa Rican colones are useful for small purchases and private transport. Agree the currency when a price is quoted in dollars, and carry a card as well as some cash. Buy essentials before leaving the coastal services for an inland trip.
