Getting into town

Puerto Caldera berth to the main port gate, the onward pickup point for independently booked transport on Star Clippers calls.

  • Shuttle: Star Clippers' 2026/27 disembarkation instructions describe an internal bus to the commercial-port exit. This is a berth-to-gate service, not a transfer to Puntarenas.
  • Taxi: Independently arranged taxis and transfers meet outside the main gate; Star Clippers' own transfers and excursions depart from the pier.

Ships berth alongside in an active cargo port. Follow the designated passenger movement arrangements through the working terminal. Before booking an independent collection, give the driver the ship's name and establish which side of the gate you will meet on.

About this port

Puerto Caldera is a commercial port on the Gulf of Nicoya used by ocean cruises, including ships starting or ending their voyage here. It is separate from the cruise pier in central Puntarenas. That distinction determines your transport booking: a driver heading for Puntarenas's waterfront pier will be at the wrong port.

For a transit call, choose a town visit in Puntarenas or a nature excursion towards Carara. For embarkation or final disembarkation, organise the airport or hotel transfer around the cruise line's joining instructions before adding sightseeing.

Getting Around

Use a booked vehicle or excursion for a visit beyond the port. Specify Paseo de los Turistas in Puntarenas for a waterfront outing, or Carara National Park's visitor entrance for a forest visit. A transfer simply sold as “Puntarenas port” needs clarification before payment.

For airport travel, Star Clippers gives 70 km and approximately 90 minutes from Puerto Caldera to Juan Santamaría International Airport, SJO. This published planning estimate was checked 2 October 2026; it is not a guaranteed journey time. Keep airport travel separate from a same-day return-to-ship excursion.

Things to Do

Puntarenas waterfront. Paseo de los Turistas runs along the town's beach and offers kiosks, refreshments and places to pause. The local frozen treat is a Churchill. After the drive, this is a flexible outing: decide how much of the waterfront you want to explore and keep a clear meeting point for the return vehicle.

Carara National Park. Forest trails offer a nature-focused alternative to town. SINAC identifies a transition between dry and humid forest and provides a universal-access trail within the park. That trail's design does not describe your ship's gangway or transfer vehicle. Non-resident adult entry is US$10 plus VAT, with tickets obtained through SINAC's online system, checked 2 October 2026. Arrange transport and admission together.

A coffee visit after disembarkation. Star Clippers publishes an airport-ending excursion to Doka Estate, combining the coffee-growing and processing story with onward travel. It suits a final cruise day when the flight schedule allows it. Do not book an airport-ending tour if you need to rejoin the ship.

Getting back to your ship

For transit passengers, the journey ends at the ship, not at the external gate. Tell your driver Puerto Caldera commercial port and allow time for the authorised transfer through the terminal. Follow the ship's current instructions for that return movement; the published outbound shuttle description is not a timetable for re-entry. Road delays and the extra gate connection make a tightly packed itinerary unwise. Use the ship's all-aboard deadline when agreeing the return pickup.

Practical Information

Keep sun protection, water and necessary medication with you. If leaving the ship permanently, organise luggage before sightseeing: Star Clippers states that the terminal has no left-luggage service. Carry small amounts of colones for incidental spending and establish the currency of any private transfer quote. For a forest visit, pack suitable shoes and rain protection in your day bag rather than checked luggage.
