Cruise ships dock alongside at Puerto de La Estaca. The port authority's cruise protocol assigns berths and mooring positions and describes passenger collection on the quay.

The protocol identifies two collection areas: one by the ro-ro ramp and another in front of the passenger terminal beside the marina. Returning passengers must pass security. Use the collection point assigned to your transfer: a vehicle by the ferry terminal may be separate from a ship's excursion coach.

The cruise-line shuttle route leaves from the ro-ro-ramp collection area for Valverde bus station and returns to the meeting point in front of the passenger terminal. Keep the ship's last shuttle return time with you.

About this port

El Hierro calls arrive at La Estaca; Valverde, the island capital, is inland. Arrange how you will leave the port before planning a walk around town or a viewpoint excursion. A modest itinerary with a confirmed return vehicle is a better fit for a short call than a circuit of the island.

El Hierro is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, designated in 2000, and a UNESCO Global Geopark, designated in 2015. These are different programmes; neither is a World Heritage inscription.

Getting Around

For Valverde: TransHierro route 11 connects the passenger terminal with Valverde bus station. Some journeys on its route sheet are supplied by route 7, which also continues along the coast. Ferry-linked departures make the dated operator timetable useful when choosing the outward and return journey.

For viewpoints: agree a route and return time with a driver, or confirm hire-car collection in advance. The island's steep terrain makes distance alone a poor measure of how much fits. Keep a viewpoint outing separate from an ambitious hike unless the walking duration and pickup are settled.

Things to Do

  • Valverde with time to spare: explore the inland capital rather than treating it only as a transfer stop. This is the simplest town-based choice once transport from La Estaca is arranged.
  • La Peña viewpoint: the island tourism board identifies César Manrique's viewpoint near Guarazoca as an overlook of the El Golfo valley. Pair it with Valverde if your driver confirms the available time.
  • Isora: the Biosphere Reserve Interpretation Centre provides context for the island's landscape; the village also has a viewpoint over Las Playas. Check opening arrangements before making the centre the reason for the journey.

For a short call, choose Valverde and one additional stop.

Getting back to your ship

Return: keep the port name, terminal meeting point and ship's all-aboard time with you. Leave room for security after the drive back.
