Cruise ships anchor offshore and transfer passengers in the ship’s boats, according to the Cyprus Ports Authority’s Pafos Port description. The harbour adjoins the Kato Pafos archaeological area and castle waterfront; the port authority describes paved pedestrian space along the harbour and through Castle Square. This makes a local archaeological visit a useful starting plan once you have landed.
Get your tender landing, assistance arrangements and last return boat from the cruise line. Give a driver that landing point rather than the name of an archaeological site: its entrance and the boat landing are different meeting places.
Allow for queues as well as the tender journey in both directions. The ship’s last-tender time governs your return, even if a nearby attraction remains open later.
About this port
For a short Paphos call, the archaeological remains beside Kato Pafos harbour offer the most focused plan. The UNESCO property named Paphos, inscribed in 1980, includes several separate components: ancient Nea Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings and the sanctuary at Kouklia. They are not all inside one harbour-side archaeological park.
Getting Around
The bus operator places Harbour Station beside the entrance to the Kato Pafos archaeological site. Route 610 connects this station with the Municipal Market area, providing an alternative to walking between the harbour and the upper town. Plan the return bus before leaving the harbour area.
For a limited visit, choose the harbour archaeological site or the market area as your main focus. Kouklia requires a separate journey; arrange transport and a return time before committing to it.
Things to Do
- Nea Paphos archaeology: the remains include Roman villas and mosaic floors depicting mythological subjects. Prioritise this component if you want archaeology without organising a separate journey out to Kouklia.
- Harbour and castle surroundings: the port authority describes pedestrian access around the castle square and harbour. This offers an outdoor alternative if you decide against an archaeological-site visit.
- Tombs of the Kings or Kouklia: these are separate parts of the UNESCO property. Choose one with transport planned; do not treat the World Heritage designation as evidence that all its components are close together.
Getting back to your ship
For a limited visit, choose the harbour archaeological site or the market area as your main focus. Kouklia requires a separate journey; arrange transport and a return time before committing to it.
Practical Information
Currency is the euro (EUR). Dial 112 for police, fire or ambulance emergencies. For a tender call, include the return boat journey and any queue in your available time ashore.
