Ships dock alongside after navigating the roughly 15-kilometre canal. Current port and destination sources identify Nouveau Bassin, including Quai Gaston Lamy, and Quai de Calix as cruise locations. The walk above applies to Nouveau Bassin; Quai de Calix is a separate arrival location.

Passenger access is controlled on cruise days. The tourist office identifies Chaussée d'Alger as the approach from Caen. The cruise club arranges its free shuttle at the cruise line's request.

Use your ship's daily programme for the assigned quay, gate and any arranged shuttle's return point.

About this port

Caen is an inland port of call reached through the canal from Ouistreham. A visit can focus on the ducal castle and central streets, or on the Mémorial de Caen and the history of the Second World War. Each can occupy the useful part of a short call, so choose a priority before adding a wider Normandy excursion.

This guide concerns arriving by ocean-going cruise ship at the Caen canal quays. An itinerary using Ouistreham's coastal ferry facilities would need a different transfer into the city.

Getting Around

From a central drop-off, the castle and adjoining historic streets are suitable for a selected walking circuit. Walking across the castle grounds and visiting a museum are different time commitments; check admissions before deciding to do both museums.

Twisto operates local buses and trams. Use its current visitor information to plan a journey to the Mémorial or the coast. The operator identifies line 12 for Ouistreham, but that does not mean it collects passengers from the Caen cruise quays. A taxi or excursion may give a simpler direct connection where a public route involves extra walking or changes.

D-Day beaches and memorial sites are spread over a wider area. For a short call, a focused excursion to one sector is more realistic than trying to cover several beaches as well as Caen. Establish the return route to your particular port gate, especially if a private vehicle is meeting you.

Things to Do

Castle and museums: The Château de Caen provides a central historical focus. The Musée de Normandie and Musée des Beaux-Arts occupy the castle enclosure, with separate collections and visitor arrangements. Choose regional history or fine art according to your interests; use the municipal museum information for current tickets and entrance arrangements.

Château de Caen

Before it became a home for museums, Château de Caen served as a residence for Normandy’s dukes, a royal fortress and an infantry barracks.

Abbaye-aux-Hommes or Abbaye-aux-Dames: The tourist office identifies both abbeys among the city's principal monuments. Choose one as part of a city walk, checking the visitor access and any guided-tour requirements through the official destination links. Allow time to enjoy the surrounding streets rather than making the outing a series of rushed interiors.

Mémorial de Caen: Make the museum the main destination if the Second World War is your priority. Its operator recommends allowing several hours for the exhibitions. A substantial visit plus transport may use most of a call; check current opening and ticketing information before travelling there.

Historic centre: A circuit through the shopping streets and squares gives a flexible alternative to timed admissions. Leave a café or lunch stop towards the end, when you can judge the remaining transfer time.
