Plan for a tender arrival. Cunard's current destination guidance explicitly describes bringing passengers ashore by tender and places the marina, town beach and citadel within walking distance of the drop-off.

The town begins around the waterfront, so a transfer into a separate inland centre is not normally part of a local visit.

Sea conditions and the tender operation determine when you can go ashore. Record the last return departure, and allow for waiting as well as the crossing. If you need assistance boarding a tender, establish the ship's arrangements before making plans on land.

About this port

Calvi is well suited to an unhurried Corsican stop: a marina, a beach and a fortified upper town give you contrasting choices without an inland transfer. The main decision is how much climbing you want. The citadel provides the historical focus; the waterfront is the gentler place to spend the day.

For a short call, start with the citadel while you have energy, then return to the lower town for a break. Passengers preferring a quieter outing can leave out the ascent and spend their time near the marina and beach instead.

Getting Around

The citadel is an uphill walking visit. The local tourist office describes it as an inhabited upper-town neighbourhood that can be explored independently, and offers an audio-guided route. Uneven paving and the ascent make this a different proposition from staying beside the marina.

Chemins de Fer de la Corse runs the Balagne suburban service from Calvi station to L'Île-Rousse. The adult ticket costs €6 one way and the ride takes 40–45 minutes in the timetable valid from 31 August to 1 November 2026; prices checked 2026-09-08. This is an outing beyond Calvi, after reaching the town station. Choose a return that leaves another workable option before your tender deadline; a rail excursion should be a deliberate alternative to a full Calvi visit.

For inland Balagne villages, arrange a vehicle or excursion with a clear return plan.

Things to Do

Citadel: Walk into the fortified upper town for its streets, defensive setting and views over the bay. The tourism office's audio guide can supply context without tying you to a group departure. The official visitor page gives the audio-guide collection arrangements.

Marina and lower town: Make this the flexible part of the day, with time for a drink or a meal before heading back to the landing. Staying close to the waterfront makes it easier to shorten the outing if tender operations change.

Town beach: Cunard identifies the city beach as walkable from the tender drop-off. Choose a short beach visit if it fits the weather, swimming conditions and your return time. Leave belongings secure and allow time to dry off and prepare for the tender journey.

Coastal railway: If you prefer scenery and a second town to a citadel visit, investigate the L'Île-Rousse service. Check the actual running date and any disruption notices; do not assume a sightseeing train waits for cruise passengers.

Practical Information

Use euros and expect French as the official language. The emergency number is 112. Carry the documents your ship requires for returning aboard and keep its shore contact details available.

Bring drinking water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. Build the return around the tender deadline, not simply the time printed for the ship's departure.
