Ships berth in Port-Vendres or anchor outside and bring passengers ashore by tender. The local coastal plan records alongside calls and explains that port dimensions and commercial traffic also send cruise ships to anchor; Seabourn currently lists Port-Vendres among its tender ports. Follow your ship's instructions for the allocated berth or landing and permitted exit.

The harbour is within the town, but a commercial berth and the central tender landing offer different starting points. If tendering, build your afternoon around the last tender, allowing for queues as well as the crossing.

Once on the public waterfront, the tourist information office at 1 Quai François Joly is a useful place to check the day's transport and local visits. Keep the name of your ship's actual landing point with you.

About this port

Port-Vendres offers a useful choice for a short call: stay beside a working Catalan harbour, visit neighbouring Collioure, or head to the coast at Paulilles. Fishing boats, yachts and commercial shipping share this natural deep-water port near the Spanish border. The waterfront itself gives you something to explore without committing to an excursion inland.

Choose one outing and leave time for the quays afterwards. Collioure suits an interest in painting and historic buildings; Paulilles combines coastal scenery with industrial history.

Getting Around

Walking works well for the harbour circuit. Roads and paths rise away from the water, so a plan that looks compact can still involve a climb. Choose footwear for pavements and steps rather than assuming the entire visit follows a level promenade.

For Collioure or Banyuls-sur-Mer, consult liO's coastal transport guidance for bus and rail options. Route 540 serves the coastal corridor: the published Port-Vendres–Perpignan trips take about 9 minutes from Les Quais to Collioure Le Glacis, also €2 one way, checked 2026-09-08. Choose both outward and return journeys from the timetable. Port-Vendres also has a railway station, but allow separately for reaching it from your landing point. For a taxi excursion, arrange the return before leaving town rather than relying on finding a vehicle at the far end.

Things to Do

  • Explore the working waterfront. Follow the public quays towards the obelisk dedicated to Louis XVI. Look at the relationship between the fishing harbour and the larger commercial port, keeping clear of areas used for unloading. This is an easy outing to shorten if your arrival is delayed.
  • Follow the Mackintosh connection. The Scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh painted Port-Vendres during his stays here. The tourism board describes a local circuit connected with his work; ask which parts fit your available time.
  • Spend the middle of the day in Collioure. Its harbour, Royal Castle and Notre-Dame-des-Anges church provide a compact focus. Decide whether to visit a building or simply explore the waterfront, rather than filling the visit with several admissions and a tight return connection.
  • Visit Paulilles. The former dynamite works now interprets the site's industrial past, natural surroundings and Catalan boat restoration. Check the visitor centre for current access and opening information. Treat this as a separate coastal outing requiring a transport plan.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro and the official language is French. Call 112 in an emergency. Carry water and sun protection for exposed quays and coastal walks.

Choose a waterfront meal if you want to stay close to the return point; ask about service time before ordering when the ship's deadline is approaching. Check individual attractions and shops for their current opening arrangements rather than relying on a standard French timetable.
