Rouen receives both ocean-going cruise ships and river vessels at quays along the Seine. HAROPA's maritime facility is the Terminal Croisière Rive Droite, on Quai Richard Waddington at Esplanade Saint-Gervais on the right bank. River vessels can use more central quays, including Pierre Corneille, de la Bourse and de Boisguilbert.
Use the actual quay in your ship's instructions when choosing a route into town: a central river berth and the maritime terminal require different walks. The tourism board's walking estimate is to the historic centre generally; the timed bus leg ends at Cathédrale.
Follow the permitted pedestrian exit and keep the quay name available for the journey back; simply asking for the cruise terminal can be ambiguous.
About this port
Rouen rewards passengers who stay in Normandy's historic capital. The cathedral, astronomical clock and half-timbered streets make a coherent city visit, with museums available when the weather turns. Although some itineraries attach Paris to the port name, reaching the capital requires a separate journey and a realistic allowance for getting back to the ship.
Choose Rouen for a short call. Consider Paris only when the ship's stay, confirmed transport and your preferred sights leave a comfortable return margin. Time spent travelling to a railway station and across Paris belongs in that calculation as well as the train journey itself.
Getting Around
Once in the historic centre, walking is the most straightforward way to link the main sights. Choose a compact route through the cathedral area and towards the Gros-Horloge, allowing time to stop rather than trying to include every church and museum.
Use the Astuce public transport network for journeys beyond the historic centre. The operator's website directs you to My Astuce for stops, routes and ticket conditions. T2 also offers the Mont-Riboudet–Cathédrale connection described above. A taxi or ship transfer may be simpler when walking is difficult.
SNCF Connect lists trains from Rouen Rive Droite to Paris Saint-Lazare. Check both directions for your travel date, including ticket restrictions, before committing. The rail journey is only one part of the excursion: add port transfers, boarding time and travel from Saint-Lazare to your chosen attraction. A ship excursion can simplify those connections during a sufficiently long call.
Things to Do
- Make a cathedral-and-clock circuit. Notre-Dame Cathedral, associated with Monet's paintings, and the Gros-Horloge give a city walk two clear anchors. Admire the buildings from outside if admission or opening times do not fit; adding a tower visit should not crowd out the walk itself.
- Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts. Its collections include Impressionism as well as earlier European art. Pick the galleries that interest you and consult the museum's current visitor information for access and exhibitions. This is a useful alternative to a longer outdoor programme.
- Allow time for Norman food. Rouen belongs to UNESCO's Creative Cities Network in the gastronomy category, a designation distinct from World Heritage inscription. A leisurely lunch can be part of the visit, provided you agree the time available before ordering.
- Treat Paris as a full excursion. Select one neighbourhood or principal attraction rather than trying to cover the capital. An attractive outward connection is insufficient on its own: choose the return first, with an earlier fallback if possible.
Getting back to your ship
Follow the permitted pedestrian exit and keep the quay name available for the journey back; simply asking for the cruise terminal can be ambiguous.
Practical Information
The currency is the euro and French is the official language. Call 112 in an emergency. Carry the ship's contact details, quay name and boarding deadline.
Old streets and individual monuments can involve uneven paving or steps. Check access directly with any museum or attraction that is essential to your visit. Consult operators for opening times rather than relying on generic shop hours, especially when planning a museum around lunch or a train connection.
