Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: The cruise facilities at Gare Maritime de la Bourse and Quai Vauban put passengers beside the gates of Intra-Muros, Saint-Malo's walled centre.

  • Walk: allow about 5 minutes from the cruise terminal or tender landing to the gates of Intra-Muros; the port's own profile says under five minutes, making this a realistic short walk once ashore.

Saint-Malo offers both docking and tender access. Smaller ships can berth inside the harbour, while larger vessels use offshore moorings and transfer passengers ashore. The port authority identifies the Gare Maritime de la Bourse and Quai Vauban as cruise arrival points beside the walled city.

Follow the terminal's public exit to the walled city and keep the name of your return landing. Do not confuse the Bourse cruise facilities with the separate Naye ferry terminal when arranging a pickup.

Tides affect harbour operations and the waterfront landscape. If using a tender, check the final boat time before setting out and leave room for waiting at the landing. Ask the crew about boarding assistance if needed; a short distance into town does not establish that the boat transfer is step-free.

About this port

Saint-Malo's walled centre, known as Intra-Muros, is the natural focus of a short cruise call. Rampart walks look across the beaches and offshore islands, while the streets below offer cafés, shops and the cathedral. Much of the city was restored after wartime destruction, so its appearance tells a story of rebuilding as well as maritime history.

Choose between staying in Saint-Malo and making a longer excursion such as Mont-Saint-Michel. The local option is particularly rewarding when your available time is uncertain: you can adjust the length of a walk without depending on a road connection back from another destination.

Getting Around

Explore Intra-Muros on foot, choosing a section of the walls and a street-level route that suits your mobility. The full rampart circuit is approximately 1.75 km, according to the tourism office. You need not complete it to enjoy the outlook, and steps make some sections less suitable for limited mobility.

Malo Agglo Transports, or MAT, serves Saint-Malo and surrounding communities. For the railway station, MAT bus 2 runs from Intra-Muros to Gares, taking about 6 minutes on daytime services. The ticket bought on board costs €2 one way. This is an onward connection from the walled city; the cruise landing itself is reached on foot. Prices checked 2026-09-08. For Mont-Saint-Michel, use an organised excursion or pre-arranged transport with a clear return deadline. Road travel, arrival facilities and the uphill visit all consume time; the attraction should be the day's principal outing.

Things to Do

  • Walk the walls and old streets. Pair the sea-facing ramparts with a route through Intra-Muros. The shipowners' houses and reconstructed façades are worth noticing alongside the fortifications themselves. This makes an adaptable visit with frequent opportunities to pause.
  • Visit the cathedral. Its restored interior and stained glass add another perspective on the city. Check access on arrival and respect services. If an interior visit is unavailable, continue the street circuit rather than waiting away a large part of your shore time.
  • Consider Grand Bé only with local tidal advice. The island holds Chateaubriand's tomb and can be reached on foot when conditions allow. Consult the tourism office's island-access guidance and the day's local instructions. An exposed path is not a guarantee that the return will remain open.
  • Visit Mont-Saint-Michel on a longer call. The mount and its bay form a UNESCO World Heritage site. The abbey occupies the summit above the village; use the monument's visitor information for tickets, access and current hours. Allow for the approach from parking or coach drop-off as well as the visit itself.

Practical Information

France uses the euro and French is the official language. Call 112 in an emergency. Carry a windproof layer and shoes with a good grip for stone paving and exposed ramparts.

Keep the cruise landing name and final return time with you. Check individual museum and restaurant opening arrangements, and choose a meal that leaves enough time to return without rushing. Stay clear of closed tidal crossings even if other visitors are attempting them.
