The Nantes–Saint-Nazaire cruise destination has berths in three distinct places: Nantes, Montoir-de-Bretagne and Saint-Nazaire. Cruise Europe's member information confirms these alongside facilities. Your ship's assigned berth determines the transfer you need, so establish the actual port area before making independent plans.

Montoir is a working industrial complex with cargo terminals and controlled access. Use the ship or port agent's designated passenger route through the terminal, including the assigned pickup point for any bus or taxi.

A berth in Saint-Nazaire and one at Montoir require different transfers; use the instructions for your assigned berth. Keep the terminal name and return pickup point available. If using a taxi, agree where the driver is permitted to meet you.

About this port

Saint-Nazaire makes an unusual cruise stop because ships and shipbuilding are central to the visit itself. Around the former submarine base, attractions explore ocean liners, submarine life and the city's development. Public viewpoints overlook the harbour and Loire estuary, while organised industrial visits offer a closer look at working facilities.

For a few hours ashore, choose the submarine-base area as your destination and one main attraction. Nantes is a separate inland city within the wider port complex; a port name combining the two does not mean that both city centres are close to the ship.

Getting Around

After reaching the submarine-base area, several attractions can be linked on foot. The tourism office places the Espadon submarine about ten minutes' walk from the base. Consider visiting just one interior and using the remaining time for the waterfront rather than buying a combination ticket you cannot fully use.

Ycéo operates the local public transport network. In town, Ycéo bus H3 runs from Petit Maroc to Gare de Saint-Nazaire in about 9 minutes. A ticket bought on board costs €2 one way. These are public city stops, so this journey begins after the transfer out of Montoir. Prices checked 2026-09-08. Sources: Ycéo tickets, H3 timetable.

The free Ycéo Navette Centre-ville connects Parking du Théâtre and Hôtel de Ville in 10 minutes. This is a town-centre service, separate from ship transfers. Its vehicle cannot accommodate wheelchair users. Source: 2026–2027 city shuttle timetable, checked 2026-09-08.

Industrial visits follow an organised programme. Check availability and joining instructions before reserving, including any identity, clothing or mobility requirements. The tour's finish time must leave room for returning to the ship's pickup point.

Things to Do

  • Explore Escal'Atlantic. Housed inside the submarine base, this attraction recreates aspects of ocean-liner travel through collection objects, interiors and multimedia. It is a natural choice for passengers interested in how earlier sea voyages differed from their own. Consult the official visitor page for admissions and opening arrangements.
  • Visit the submarine Espadon. The vessel is displayed in the fortified lock, a separate site from Escal'Atlantic. Check the operator's access information before choosing it, particularly if enclosed spaces or restricted movement are concerns.
  • Choose the Écomusée for city history. Its account of Saint-Nazaire's transformation helps explain the waterfront beyond the ships. Use the museum page to check the visit fits your call.
  • Look across the working harbour. The port authority recommends the roofs of the submarine base and fortified lock, as well as the Vieux Môle and Jetée Est, as observation points. Check rooftop access before climbing. An organised port or shipyard visit is another option when its timetable fits.

Practical Information

The official language is French and the currency is the euro. For emergencies, dial 112. Carry the ship's contact information and your return instructions, particularly when using a transfer from Montoir.

A windproof layer is useful around the estuary. Check museum accessibility directly and allow time between attractions rather than assuming adjacent waterfront sites have a common entrance. Before eating or shopping, establish how long you need to reach the bus or taxi meeting point.
