Cruise ships remain offshore and passengers come ashore by tender at the Levant quay. Once through the landing area, you are already at the harbour. Taxis are available for outings further away.

Discuss tender boarding assistance and mobility equipment with the cruise line. Take the last-tender time ashore and leave room for a queue on your return; the time the ship sails is a different deadline.

About this port

Sanary-sur-Mer suits a day spent close to the water: a harbour walk, the town's diving museum and a climb to a chapel overlooking the coast. Frédéric Dumas, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Philippe Tailliez worked in these waters during the development of modern diving.

For a short call, put the harbour and old streets first. Add the hill walk if the weather and your mobility allow; travelling to another town introduces a rail or road connection that this compact stop does not require.

Getting Around

Walking works well for the harbour, church and central shopping streets. The route to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié climbs above town, so decide whether to tackle it before setting out in the heat. A waterfront circuit keeps the outing simpler for anyone avoiding hills.

For regional travel, Ollioules–Sanary-sur-Mer railway station is inland, in Ollioules, rather than beside the tender quay. The Colombus Centre-ville circuit starts at La Micheline and reaches the station before looping through the town's other neighbourhoods. The September timetable runs Monday–Saturday, including public holidays, from September through June (checked 2026-09-08). Allow for the approach to La Micheline and the longer return loop when planning a rail outing.

Things to Do

Start with the harbour and Saint-Nazaire church. Follow the waterfront, then turn into the streets behind it for a café or a browse in the shops. The present church dates from the nineteenth century, replacing an earlier building; the tourism office also highlights its modern frescoes. Check access locally and keep any visit discreet if worship is taking place.

Explore the history of diving. The Musée de la Plongée Frédéric Dumas is currently listed at 12 Rue Lauzet Aîné, in the Salle Maurice Fargues. Its displays include equipment from the early decades of recreational and experimental diving, alongside material associated with underwater discoveries. Check the museum's own opening information before making it part of your day. As checked on 2026-09-07, both the museum and tourism office published hours only through 29 August 2026; September admission remains unconfirmed.

Climb to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié. The chapel dates from 1560. The Montée des Oratoires leads uphill from the town towards it, with Mediterranean planting and views providing reasons to pause. Make this the main walk of the visit, returning to the harbour for a drink or lunch afterwards, rather than squeezing it in immediately before the final tender.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro and the official language is French. Dial 112 for an emergency. Keep the ship's contact details available as well, especially when travelling independently.

Bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for the uphill route if you choose it. Check individual shop and museum opening arrangements instead of assuming continuous service through lunch. For a meal, agree your available time before ordering and keep the final part of the visit near the tender landing.
