Bantry Bay Port Company's operations page identifies cruise anchorages in Glengarriff Harbour. Its cruise brochure describes using the ship's tenders, subject to permission, to bring passengers to shore. This supports treating Glengarriff as a tender arrival rather than assuming a cruise quay in the village.

The port maps several possible shore facilities, including Glengarriff Pier and Pontoon, Glengarriff Slipway and Bluepool Pontoon. Use the landing named in the ship's daily programme and its last-tender time.

Ask about tender boarding and landing access if you use a mobility aid. Neither a sheltered anchorage nor a ramp at a shore facility guarantees that transfer from the ship is possible for everyone.

About this port

Glengarriff offers two quite different shore outings: a boat trip to the gardens of Ilnacullin, also called Garinish Island, or a walk in Glengarriff Nature Reserve. For a short call, choose one. The island visit involves another boat connection after the cruise tender, while the reserve requires time to reach the trail start as well as to walk.

Glengarriff and Bantry town are separate places around Bantry Bay. Use the landing name in the ship's daily programme when arranging to meet a driver or join a local boat.

Getting Around

For Garinish Island: local boats run to the island separately from the cruise tender. OPW confirms that boat operators charge separately from island admission. An island ticket does not by itself provide the return to the cruise landing.

For the reserve: walking trails start at the nature reserve's main car park. Allow for getting there and returning from it. The advertised trail length is not the distance from your tender landing.

If your usable time ashore shrinks, select the outing with the clearest return arrangement. Combining the island, woodland and a longer road excursion leaves several ways for a small delay to affect the return.

Things to Do

Choose a woodland route by terrain: the reserve's River Walk is a 1 km route on a mostly level footpath. Lady Bantry's Lookout is also listed as 1 km but has a steep path and steps. Similar lengths do not imply similar effort. The reserve recommends strong shoes, with walking boots for the lookout and more rugged routes.

Choose the island for gardens: Garinish Island has formal gardens and Bryce House. Check OPW's seasonal opening information and whether house visits are available on your date. OPW warns of uneven walkways and limited access for visitors with disabilities, so discuss the complete boat-and-island journey before booking.

Both choices offer a defined outing without needing to tour the wider Beara Peninsula. Leave enough time to return to the correct cruise tender landing, not merely to Glengarriff village.

Practical Information

  • Currency: euro (€).
  • Emergency services: 112 or 999.
  • Save the cruise landing and any island-boat meeting point separately; they should not be assumed to be the same pier.
  • Keep the island-boat ticket and cruise-tender instructions separate.

Frequently asked

Can you walk into Glengarriff village from the cruise landing? Yes, when the ship uses one of the village-side landing areas mapped by the port. The exact short route depends on whether the call uses Glengarriff Pier and Pontoon, the slipway or Bluepool Pontoon.

Do cruise ships dock or tender in Glengarriff? They tender. Cruise ships anchor in Glengarriff Harbour and use the vessel's own tenders with port permission.

Is the cruise tender the same boat as the Garinish Island ferry? No. The cruise tender brings passengers ashore; local operators run the separate Garinish Island boats, and OPW says the boat charge is separate from island admission.

Where do cruise tenders land in Glengarriff? At the shore facility assigned for the call. The port maps Glengarriff Pier and Pontoon, Glengarriff Slipway and Bluepool Pontoon as separate landing areas.
