Foyle Port identifies Greencastle as a tender port. Ships use Lough Foyle anchorage, with tender options at Greencastle in the Republic of Ireland and Magilligan Point in Northern Ireland. The port's brochure places coach pickup beside both piers, so use the landing and pickup named in the ship's daily programme.
Do not assume that a call here is simply a last-minute substitute for an inaccessible Derry berth: the port markets several separate arrival options. Read the ship's transport offer and last return departure before going to Derry.
Keep the final tender time with you. A return vehicle must reach the correct shore landing with time for boarding, not just before the ship sails.
About this port
Greencastle is the County Donegal tender option within Foyle Port's cruise operation. It is a different arrival from the upriver berths at Lisahally or Fort George in Derry/Londonderry. A visit to Derry therefore requires onward transport; it does not begin when you step off the tender.
The useful choice is between staying near Greencastle Harbour and travelling to Derry's walled centre. The museum closure below matters if you choose a local indoor visit.
Getting Around
Public bus to Derry: TFI Local Link route 957 connects Greencastle Post Office with Derry Patrick Street in about 55–70 minutes, depending on the departure. The timetable lists service every day other than Christmas Day.
Pre-arranged transfer: a ship excursion or booked driver can start near the tender pier and return to it. This reduces the need to reach a village bus stop, but you still need an agreed collection time and location. On a short call, choose one Derry visit rather than adding a second distant destination.
Stay local: the Inishowen Maritime Museum is in the old Coast Guard station overlooking Greencastle Harbour. A harbour visit needs fewer transport connections, although museum availability is changing.
Things to Do
Local maritime history: the Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium interprets the area's seafaring history. Its site gives a closure from 13 September 2026, with reopening expected in early 2027 for redevelopment (checked 2026-09-08). The reopening is a plan, not an admission date; read the museum's current notice before making it the purpose of your call.
Derry's walls: if the transfers fit, make the historic walled centre your main outing. Foyle Port's brochure identifies the seventeenth-century walls and city attractions. Pick a return meeting point before exploring; sightseeing time ends when you must start back towards Greencastle.
Harbour time: for a delayed arrival or a brief call, keep your visit around the village harbour and return landing. The Magilligan ferry adds another outward and return connection.
Getting back to your ship
Keep the final tender time with you. A return vehicle must reach the correct shore landing with time for boarding, not just before the ship sails.
Practical Information
- Currency: euro (€) in Greencastle; pound sterling (£) in Derry and elsewhere in Northern Ireland. Carry the appropriate payment method for each side.
- Emergency services: 112 or 999 work in both jurisdictions.
- Keep the landing name, ship contact and last tender time accessible offline. The two shores of Lough Foyle are not interchangeable return points.
