Arrival & Getting Ashore

Getting to the centre: Palau's conventional cruise landing remains unverified; the public Stazione Marittima and Piazza Fresi are central reference points, not a promised cruise route.

Sources: Comune di Palau: commercial port, Comune di Palau: taxis.

Evidence remains thin in both directions, so the existing mixed classification is retained. Public ferry and marina facilities do not establish where a conventional cruise call lands; your ship's daily programme is the source for that call.

Public ferries and beach buses depart from the port. Check the route from your cruise landing to the service you need; the ferry berths are not a confirmed cruise landing point.

On a tender call, leave time for boarding and the crossing back. Public-ferry accessibility must not be treated as evidence that a cruise tender is step-free.

About this port

Palau faces the La Maddalena archipelago from northern Sardinia's Gallura coast. Its appeal lies in the relationship between town and landscape: a harbour for island ferries, nearby sandy beaches and granite hills carrying natural rock formations and former military defences.

For a few hours ashore, choose a beach close to town or one of the elevated viewpoints. A ferry crossing to La Maddalena is another possibility, but adds a second boat journey to any cruise tender transfers. Make that decision after checking how much usable time you actually have on land.

Getting Around

Walking suits a local waterfront and beach visit. For the hilltop sights, consider a taxi with a prearranged return. Palau's current municipal tariff sets a €15 minimum for every taxi journey, before any applicable supplements (checked 8 September 2026).

Caramelli's seasonal timetables list routes from Palau port to Capo d'Orso and to Porto Pollo and Isola dei Gabbiani. Use the municipal beach bus page to find the operator's timetables.

For La Maddalena, the municipal ferry information links to the operators. Check both directions and reserve a generous margin before your ship's return deadline, including any tender transfer. A ferry to La Maddalena town and a boat excursion around the outer islands are different outings.

Things to Do

Climb to the Roccia dell'Orso. The bear-shaped granite formation gives Capo d'Orso its name. SardegnaTurismo describes an approach path of about half a kilometre and views across the archipelago. This is a walking visit even if you arrange road transport to the entrance. Bring suitable shoes and check Musei Palau's visiting information for current access.

Explore Monte Altura. The nineteenth-century fortress stands on a hill west of town. Local granite helps its walls blend into the hillside, while a substantial staircase connects its levels. It is a good choice for an interest in coastal defences, provided the guided-visit arrangements and physical access suit you. Check the museum operator before committing to transport.

Stay near the water. Palau Vecchio and the Isolotto beach are identified by the regional tourism board as beaches near the port. A shorter beach stop leaves more flexibility than an excursion across the archipelago. Select your spot after checking local conditions and the route from your actual landing.

Practical Information

The currency is the euro (€), the official language is Italian and the emergency number is 112. Carry water, sun protection and the ship's local contact details.

Opening arrangements for the rock, fortress and museum vary through the year. Use the operator's current information, including any closure notices, rather than a generic daily-hours rule. Keep swimwear for the beach and bring footwear suitable for the granite paths and fortress steps.
