Ships may berth or use an anchorage. The port authority describes a main berth, a smaller berth at the Škurda river and passenger transfers to and from anchorages. Berthing is therefore not a simple rule that the largest ship docks and every other ship uses the same tender pier.
The port authority does not publish which arrangement is normal, so this guide retains mixed access; use the ship's daily programme.
Use the ship's announcement for your access mode and, on a tender call, the landing and return-queue location. The port's published 100-metre figure describes the passenger port's relationship to the old town; tender calls may use a different landing.
If you arrive alongside at the main port, the nearby old town is a practical destination on foot. A vehicle is unnecessary solely to reach it if the short access route suits your mobility needs. Tender boarding requirements still apply on an anchored call.
About this port
Kotor's main advantage for a short cruise visit is the proximity of its port to the walled town: the port authority lists the old town as about 100 metres from the port. A walk through its squares and a single interior visit can therefore be the whole outing, without arranging a journey around the bay.
The town belongs to UNESCO's Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor, inscribed in 1979. That designation covers a wider cultural landscape, including other bay settlements; it is not confined to the streets inside Kotor's walls.
Getting Around
Keep a short visit within the old town, using the port as your return reference. Begin with an unhurried walk and choose an indoor stop once you know how much time remains. Allow for the ship's tender process, where applicable, before allocating all the advertised port time to sightseeing.
Perast and Risan are separate settlements around the bay, not extensions of the old-town walk. Consider them only after establishing an outward and return transport plan that fits your call.
Things to Do
- Old-town squares, palaces and fortifications: use these as the framework for a walk rather than treating the visit as a race to a hilltop viewpoint. The town and its mountain setting are both part of the UNESCO landscape.
- Maritime Museum of Montenegro: the port authority identifies the museum as an old-town attraction. It is a possible indoor focus for a visit centred on Kotor's maritime past; consult admission arrangements before committing your limited time to it.
- Cathedral of Saint Tryphon: another old-town stop identified by the port authority. Plan an interior visit around the site's visitor access and worship arrangements rather than assuming unrestricted entry.

Practical Information
- Currency: euro, used by Montenegro without a monetary agreement with the EU.
- Emergency help: 112 reaches emergency services throughout Montenegro.
- Note whether the ship specifies an all-aboard time or a final tender time, and use the relevant instruction when planning your return. Keep the named landing or berth location available on your phone or on paper rather than relying solely on the ship's position in the bay.
