Gruž is the cruise port, with alongside berths and a passenger terminal. The port authority lists organised transport to the Old City and taxi ranks outside the port. Leave your berth by the designated passenger exit. If you're using a ship-arranged transfer, keep a note of its return meeting point.
Old Harbour: the county port authority identifies an outer anchorage between the mainland and Lokrum. Its rules designate the head and south side of Veliki muo for landing passengers from ships at that anchorage. Your ship's instructions determine the landing and collection point actually used. Note that point before you set off; it's a different return destination from Gruž.
About this port
Dubrovnik's Old City has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Ships normally dock at Gruž, which is a transfer or a substantial walk away from the Old City. If your sailing uses the Old Harbour tender landing instead, you arrive beside the historic centre. Allow for your transfer first, then choose one main attraction.
Getting Around
For Pile, on the western side of the Old City, take Libertas routes 1A and 1B from the Gruž waterfront. Find the stop nearest your exit on the operator's route map and board towards Pile. On the way back, check the stop and the direction towards Gruž/Mokošica. Route 8 serves the area above the Old City near the cable car; it is not a Pile service. Check the current timetable.
Allow extra time if your berth is distant, and for crossings and rests. A bus or taxi saves walking effort, but traffic and waiting still count towards your return allowance. A pre-bought Libertas ticket is valid for an hour after you first register it on the bus; an onboard ticket covers a single ride.
The cable-car operator describes approaches to its lower station around the walls from Pile or Ploče, and a steeper stair route from Stradun through Buža Gate. If steps are difficult for you, talk to the operator about the lower-station approach before booking; a vehicle transfer on its own does not establish step-free access.
Things to Do
- An indoor visit: the Rector's Palace houses the Cultural History Museum, with rooms illustrating the government and domestic life of the Dubrovnik Republic. Check its opening information before you plan to go in.
- An outdoor visit: the City Walls operator gives their length as 1,940 metres. Allow time for the circuit, photographs and rests, as well as your port transfer. Take water and sun protection, as the operator recommends, and check its current admission and opening information.
- A higher viewpoint: the cable car climbs to Mount Srđ above the city. Allow time to reach the lower station, and for queues and the descent. Its hours vary by month.
As an editorial planning suggestion, with about three hours in the Old City after transfers and before your return allowance, choose the palace or the walls. Adding the cable car means relying on a second queue and journey. All-aboard time comes first.
Getting back to your ship
Getting back: carry the ship's contact details and your berth or tender instructions. Allow separate time for the transfer to Gruž or the tender queue at the Old Harbour.
Practical Information
- Money: Croatia uses the euro (€), introduced on 1 January 2023.
- Emergencies: call 112. Croatia's government confirms that visitors can report emergencies in English.
- Getting back: carry the ship's contact details and your berth or tender instructions. Allow separate time for the transfer to Gruž or the tender queue at the Old Harbour.
