Cruise ships dock alongside at Brindisi. The port authority's March 2026 brochure gives two useful reference distances: the city centre is about 5 km from Costa Morena and about 200 metres from Carbonifera. These are the authority's general port-to-centre figures, not measured walks from every gangway.
At Costa Morena, plan to use the authorised passenger transfer rather than setting out through the working port. A view across the water does not show the length of the road route around the harbour.
Ask reception staff which passenger exit applies before arranging a meeting with an independent driver.
About this port
Brindisi makes a rewarding local stop when you give the harbour and old town time of their own. The waterfront opens towards the sea entrance, while inland streets lead to the cathedral square and the small medieval church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro. Much of the interest lies in moving between these places rather than travelling far from the city.
Your berth makes a substantial difference to the day. A ship beside the inner harbour and one at Costa Morena have quite different transfer needs. Establish that detail before deciding whether to stay in Brindisi or take an excursion into the Salento countryside.
Getting Around
Once in the old town, explore on foot. Choose a circuit linking the waterfront, cathedral area and San Giovanni al Sepolcro, with time to sit down between visits. Waterfront walking can be easier than the stair approaches to some monuments, so check the route if anyone avoids steps.
STP's route AP also serves Piazza Capitanerie di Porto and the airport. Board at the Costa Morena ferry-area stop after using the authorised cruise exit; this is a separate departure point from the cruise gangway. The operator's timetable shows the route.
For a taxi or excursion beyond town, confirm the total price and return pickup before departure. Lecce or Ostuni can be the focus of a longer outing, but avoid combining several inland towns during a short call. Check the driving time and your ship's hours before booking.
Things to Do
Waterfront and Roman column. Walk towards the Scalinata Virgilio and the surviving column above the harbour. The change in height brings a different view of the water. Leave time to enjoy the surrounding streets instead of treating the waterfront as simply a route to a waiting coach.
Piazza Duomo. The cathedral and its setting offer a natural pause in a town walk. Check access locally and respect worship; an exterior visit still works well if the interior is unavailable.
San Giovanni al Sepolcro. This medieval church has an unusual rounded plan and surviving wall paintings. Its compact scale makes it a useful contrast to the open harbour. Check current visitor arrangements rather than relying on general Italian opening hours.
A local lunch. Build the route around one or two interiors and a meal, then begin the return to your pickup point. At Costa Morena, the transfer back remains part of the outing even after you have finished sightseeing.

Practical Information
Italian is the main language; currency is the euro (€). Call 112 in an emergency.
Take water and sun protection for exposed waterfront walking. Keep the port's return instructions and the ship's contact details with you. Check transport and attraction arrangements for the visit date.
