Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: From cruise berth 15, head towards Piazza Kennedy at the city edge of the port, with Piazza Cavour as the onward bus destination.
- Shuttle: follow your ship's port-transfer instructions. Free Conerobus line 20 ran between the cruise terminal and the Via Einaudi check-in terminal on the listed September 2026 cruise dates; ask the ship or port whether it runs on your date. It is a port transfer, not a city-centre bus.
- Public transport: Conerobus 1/4 from Piazza Kennedy–Porto towards Piazza IV Novembre, €1.60 one way using a ticket bought before boarding; the ticket is valid for 60 minutes. Check the current Conerobus timetable for departures to Piazza Cavour on your date.

Cruise ships dock alongside. The municipality's March 2026 announcement identifies cruise reception at berth 15; confirm your own ship's berth before arranging an independent pickup.
Dorica Port Services describes an internal shuttle taking disembarking cruise passengers from the terminal towards Facility 2A. Follow the arrangements given for your ship; the port transfer and any sightseeing bus are different services. Ask where the return pickup is before leaving the terminal area.
The historic centre borders the port. Follow the marked passenger paths rather than cutting across operational quays. Once at the Molo Santa Maria passenger-control area, the port authority documents a 300-metre walk, about four minutes, to Piazza Kennedy. That final street section is realistic on foot; the internal transfer from berth 15 comes first.
About this port
Ancona is a working Adriatic port with enough history close to the harbour to fill a short call. Its layout encourages a choice: stay near the waterfront monuments and lower streets, or climb towards San Ciriaco Cathedral for a wider view over the city and sea.
The cathedral, archaeological museum and harbour arches can be combined selectively, but the hills make a full sightseeing circuit more demanding than the compact centre suggests. Choose a few stops and leave time to return through the port's passenger arrangements.
Getting Around
Once outside the controlled port area, walking is the simplest approach to the central sights. The municipal walking itinerary links the streets around Portella Santa Maria with the archaeological museum, Guasco Hill and San Ciriaco. It describes a climbing route, so choose a shorter lower-town circuit if gradients are a concern.
Conerobus 1/4 also connects Piazza Kennedy with the main railway station. A taxi may make the uphill section easier, but agree the pickup point and any waiting arrangement before starting.
For a rail excursion, plan the transfer to the main station as part of the journey. With only a few hours, staying in Ancona leaves more time for sightseeing.
Things to Do
San Ciriaco Cathedral. The cathedral crowns Guasco Hill. Its medieval architecture and position above the harbour make it a useful focus for a walk. Check the municipal visitor page for opening arrangements, and avoid entering as a sightseeing group during services.
Trajan's Arch and the historic harbour. The Roman arch offers a direct link between the port and the city's ancient past. Combine it with the surrounding public waterfront where access is permitted. This can be an appealing alternative to a longer museum visit, especially when the weather invites time outside.
Archaeology or painting. Choose the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche or the Pinacoteca Civica F. Podesti according to your interests. The municipal itinerary places both within a route through the old town. Check each venue's current visitor details and allow the collection time of its own rather than rushing through several interiors.
Lower-town streets. Use the remaining time for a meal and a short wander before returning to the port gate. Keeping the final stop near your return route makes the day easier to adjust if an earlier visit takes longer than expected.
Getting back to your ship
Dorica Port Services describes an internal shuttle taking disembarking cruise passengers from the terminal towards Facility 2A. Follow the arrangements given for your ship; the port transfer and any sightseeing bus are different services. Ask where the return pickup is before leaving the terminal area.
Practical Information
Italian is the main language; the currency is the euro (€). Call 112 for emergencies.
Wear shoes suitable for slopes and stone paving. Keep the ship's identification and return instructions with you, including any shuttle meeting point. Check opening hours and public transport schedules for the visit date.
The cruise terminal has a wheelchair ramp. Dorica Port Services describes a free equipped minibus, operated by Croce Gialla–Anpas Marche, between the railway station, ticket office and embarkation/disembarkation points. Arrange this assistance through the port authority or maritime agency at least 24 hours ahead.
Frequently asked
Can you walk from Ancona port into the centre? Yes, after leaving the controlled port area. The documented final section from the Molo Santa Maria passenger-control area to Piazza Kennedy is 300 metres, about four minutes; this excludes the transfer from cruise berth 15.
Is there a free shuttle at Ancona cruise port? Ask your ship or the port about your date. Free Conerobus line 20 ran between the cruise terminal and the Via Einaudi check-in terminal on listed September 2026 cruise dates; that timetable does not establish a November service. The transfer serves the port rather than Piazza Cavour.
How much is the bus into central Ancona? Conerobus 1/4 from Piazza Kennedy–Porto to Piazza Cavour costs €1.60 one way with a ticket bought before boarding. Use the current Conerobus timetable to plan the ride and your return.
Do cruise ships dock or tender in Ancona? They dock alongside. The municipal cruise-reception information identifies berth 15.
