Gaženica accommodates large cruise ships alongside, approximately 3.5–4 kilometres outside the historic centre according to the port authority and terminal operator. Plan a transfer into town. The terminal operator gives about 15 minutes by car to the Land Gate; allow extra time for traffic and port procedures.
The port authority also confirms cruise reception at Zadar's peninsula passenger port. If your ship uses that waterfront, the old town is immediately accessible once you leave the controlled port area. Alongside berthing is the normal arrangement described by the port facilities.
At Gaženica, taxis and private transfers use the spaces in front of the terminal. The operator also offers an electric golf-car transfer along the piers for passengers with mobility difficulties, on request.
About this port
Zadar's historic peninsula combines Roman remains, churches and Venetian defences with the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun. Plan a walk with one optional indoor visit.
Your first decision is transport. Gaženica cruise port is outside the old town, while the older peninsula port opens directly onto the city centre. Establish which one your ship uses before deciding how much time is available for sightseeing.
Getting Around
For public transport from Gaženica, Liburnija route 9A serves the ferry terminal and main bus station, Autobusni kolodvor. At the bus station, route 2 serves Poluotok (Centar). Use the operator's city transport page for current timetables; terminal staff can identify the permitted route from your cruise exit to the ferry-terminal bus stop.
Allow for the connection as well as the driving time, and check the return departures before leaving the terminal area. Carry euro cash if purchasing a ticket from the driver; the operator also lists its Zadar City digital ticket option.
A taxi can simplify the transfer. Using transport from Gaženica preserves time for exploring the peninsula on foot. Record where your return transport boards.
Things to Do
Begin with the Land Gate and Venetian defences if your transfer leaves you near the landward end of the peninsula. The gate stands beside Foša harbour. Zadar's defensive system forms part of UNESCO's Venetian Works of Defence, inscribed in 2017. This designation concerns the specified fortifications, not every building in the old town.
Continue through the central streets towards the Roman Forum and St Donatus. The Archaeological Museum identifies the former church's circular form and its construction over remains of the ancient forum. It makes a useful focused visit for anyone interested in the city's early medieval architecture; consult the museum's St Donatus page for visitor information before planning entry.
Spend part of the walk at the Sea Organ, where waves drive sounds through pipes beneath the waterfront. The neighbouring Greeting to the Sun uses collected solar energy for its night-time light display. You can see the installation during daylight, but an evening effect should not determine the return time for a daytime cruise call.
For a final stop, choose People's Square and a café. Five Wells Square and Petar Zoranić Square are further options; select those that fit your route back.
Getting back to your ship
Allow for the connection as well as the driving time, and check the return departures before leaving the terminal area. Carry euro cash if purchasing a ticket from the driver; the operator also lists its Zadar City digital ticket option.
Practical Information
Croatia uses the euro (€) and the official language is Croatian. Call 112 for emergencies; alert port staff as well if an incident occurs inside the terminal.
Carry water and sun protection, and wear shoes suitable for stone paving. Check individual attraction hours and transport departures close to your visit. The Gaženica operator advises passengers needing wheelchair assistance to arrange it with the shipboard team. Leave time for the return road journey, any bus change and port boarding procedures.
