Cruise ships normally berth alongside. The city identifies Molo Longo as a reception point for large cruise vessels, and a recent AIDAblu call used that quay. The port authority's cruise brochure describes berths at the Maritime Passenger Terminal and a separate container/cruise pier. It quotes approximately 300 metres to the city centre from the passenger terminal and 700 metres from the container/cruise pier. These are the authority's general walking distances, rather than measurements from every possible gangway to Korzo.

The brochure also identifies tender reception at piers 30B, 30C and 30D in the Sušak basin, beside the passenger-terminal area. Use the authorised pedestrian exit and keep the berth or tender collection point saved on your phone. If assistance is needed, confirm both the ship-to-shore transfer and the route through the port with the cruise team.

About this port

Rijeka offers a city day on Kvarner Bay: a working waterfront, the pedestrian Korzo, market halls and museums, with Trsat Castle above the centre. For a first visit, choose between spending your time in the lower city and adding the uphill journey to Trsat. Both make a useful few hours ashore without arranging an excursion to another island or resort.

The waterfront's substantial buildings and the old streets behind Korzo reward a closer look. Rijeka's industrial and trading history also gives its museums a different emphasis from the archaeological sites found at many other Adriatic ports.

Getting Around

Once outside the port, walking suits Korzo, the central market and the lower old town. Trsat is a separate uphill outing. The tourism board identifies the Trsat stairway as a walking approach, but taking transport uphill can leave more energy for exploring the castle and returning through the city.

Autotrolej route 2 serves Trsat. Its Trsat-bound stops include Riva, Tržnica and Fiumara B in the lower city; Trsat crkva is the church stop near the shrine. Follow the signs from there to the castle. The one-zone ticket bought from the driver costs €2.50 one way; allow about 18 minutes from Riva to Trsat crkva, excluding waiting. Prices checked 2026-09-08. Use the operator's route page for departures.

Things to Do

Start with Korzo and the old town if you want a flexible visit. Walk through the City Tower area towards Kobler Square, then explore the nearby streets and St Vitus' Cathedral. Café stops are easy to fit around this route, and you can shorten the walk whenever you need to return.

For a more focused indoor visit, choose the Sugar Palace, part of the City Museum of Rijeka at Krešimirova 28. Its permanent exhibition follows Rijeka's economic, political and cultural history from the eighteenth century onwards. Check the museum's website for admission and opening arrangements before making it the centrepiece of your day.

The central market, Placa, offers another way to understand the city through its produce, fish hall and surrounding eating places. Combine it with the waterfront rather than treating it as a shopping excursion across town.

Choose Trsat Castle for views over Rijeka and the bay. The castle also has interpretation and exhibition spaces, while the neighbouring shrine adds a second reason to make the climb. Check the tourism board's castle page for visitor information. On a short call, make this your principal addition to Korzo rather than trying to fit in every museum as well.

Practical Information

Croatia uses the euro (€) and the official language is Croatian. Dial 112 for emergencies.

Wear shoes suitable for steps if visiting Trsat, and carry water for the uphill sections. Church visits should fit around worship. Museum, castle and shop hours vary, so consult individual venues rather than relying on blanket opening times. Leave time to retrace the port approach and, when tendering, to join the return queue.
