Arrival & Getting Ashore
Getting to the centre: From Cres Town's passenger quays, the main pier or western breakwater, head along the harbour towards the town loggia and old centre.
- Walk: realistic for a town visit; the western harbour's shore route was rebuilt to provide pedestrian access to the centre, which the tourist board recommends exploring on foot.

Orientation, not a walking route

Cres Port Authority identifies two passenger facilities: the main pier, approximately 120 m long and intended primarily for passenger and excursion vessels, and the western breakwater, which also serves scheduled passenger traffic. These are harbour facilities, not interchangeable cruise meeting points. The authority's description does not establish which cruise ships berth or tender, so obtain the landing location from the ship before arranging collection.
Katarina Line includes Cres Town in its small-ship cruise itineraries, confirming cruise use. These itineraries and the port authority's descriptions do not establish whether ships usually dock or tender.
Check that your instructions refer to Cres Town. Merag and Porozina are separate ferry ports elsewhere on the island, documented separately by the authority. Directions to a car-ferry terminal are not directions to the town harbour.
About this port
For a short stay in Cres Town, build the day around the harbour and old centre. The museum and loggia provide local stops, with beaches close enough to town to remain optional. An outing to the griffon-vulture visitor centre at Beli needs a separate transport plan.
Getting Around
A walking visit can connect the harbour, town square and old lanes. The tourist board recommends exploring the centre on foot and places the first beaches a few minutes' walk from it. The western harbour's 280 m rebuilt landside section provides pedestrian access towards the centre.
Beli's visitor centre is in the north of the island. Arrange the outward and return road journey before choosing it over town.
Things to Do
- Cres Museum: Arsan Palace houses collections covering the island's archaeology, domestic life and local trades. Check opening arrangements directly before making an indoor visit the centre of your plan.
- Loggia and old streets: combine a town-square stop with a walk through the lanes. This leaves flexibility to return early if landing or boarding takes longer than expected.
- A nearby beach: add a shore stop once you know your walking route and time remaining; do not assume that every bay is equally accessible from the harbour.
- Beli Visitor Centre: an alternative excursion for its exhibition on griffon vultures and northern Cres. It incorporates a rescue centre, but a visit is not a promise of seeing wild birds.
Getting back to your ship
Beli's visitor centre is in the north of the island. Arrange the outward and return road journey before choosing it over town.
Practical Information
- Lake Vrana: the lake supplies drinking water to the Cres–Lošinj islands. The tourist board states that access is strictly forbidden. Do not plan a swim or a walk down to the water.
- Currency: euro (€), introduced in Croatia on 1 January 2023.
- Mobility: arrange any boarding assistance with the ship before the call. The county reports adapted access to the boarding area at the redeveloped western harbour; the vessel's gangway or tender is a separate transfer.
- Emergencies: call 112, free of charge and available at all hours in Croatia; English-language calls are supported.
Frequently asked
Can you walk from Cres Town's port into the centre? Yes. The harbour, town loggia and old lanes suit a walking visit, and the western harbour has a rebuilt pedestrian connection to the centre.
Is Cres Town's cruise harbour the same as Merag or Porozina? No. Merag and Porozina are separate car-ferry ports elsewhere on the island; this guide's walking directions start at Cres Town's harbour.
Can you visit Beli from a cruise call in Cres Town? Yes, with outward and return road transport arranged. Beli's visitor centre is in the north of the island, so it is a separate outing from a walk around Cres Town.
