Cruise ships dock at İzmir's Alsancak port. Follow the passenger route from your assigned berth through the terminal and exit. Municipal port report, GoTürkiye port guide

Alsancak is already an urban neighbourhood, but the Clock Tower and Kemeraltı are farther round the bay at Konak. Allow for the walk through the port before starting your journey to those sights.

Before leaving, identify the return gate. If you need step-free transport, establish the complete route from gangway to vehicle with the cruise line.

About this port

İzmir offers an urban Aegean port day: a waterfront walk, the trading streets of Kemeraltı and the remains of ancient Smyrna. Staying in the city is a useful choice for a short call. Ephesus is a separate excursion outside İzmir, requiring a dedicated transport plan and enough time for the return.

The Historical Port City of İzmir is on Türkiye's UNESCO Tentative List. This is a proposed World Heritage property, not an inscription. Ephesus has its own inscribed World Heritage status; the two should not be confused. Historic İzmir, Ephesus

Getting Around

The Kordon promenade provides an easy route for exploring the waterfront at your own pace. You can turn back whenever you wish, which makes it useful when the call is brief or the weather discourages a longer outing.

For Konak, the city's tram network provides a practical alternative to walking the whole way. The municipality lists Alsancak Gar and Konak İskele on the Konak tram line, towards Fahrettin Altay. Use the passenger exit before heading to Alsancak Gar. Alsancak Gar also connects with suburban rail, but a railway journey is not necessary for this central sightseeing plan. Municipal transport information

A registered, metered taxi can shorten the journey or provide a direct return. Show the driver the passenger terminal location rather than simply asking for the harbour. Allow for traffic and the walk through the port after drop-off. Taxi guidance

Things to Do

Konak and Kemeraltı: use the Clock Tower as a starting landmark, then explore the bazaar district. Kemeraltı's commercial streets are part of the historic port-city area submitted to UNESCO. Leave time to pause for a drink or browse a few shops, rather than treating the market as a corridor between monuments. GoTürkiye, UNESCO submission

Agora of Smyrna: this archaeological site preserves part of the ancient city's civic and commercial centre, including substantial basement structures and porticoes. It makes a manageable historical focus within İzmir. Check the museum operator's page for access, tickets and opening arrangements; allow for uneven ground and an outdoor visit.

Alsancak and the Kordon: remain near the waterfront for a gentler outing. The port guide identifies boyoz pastry and kumru sandwiches among local specialities. A waterfront walk and lunch can fill a short visit without introducing another long transfer. GoTürkiye

Ephesus: if this is your priority, make it the day's main excursion. Confirm both outward and return transport before departure and avoid adding a full city itinerary afterwards. Use the official archaeological-site page for its changing admission arrangements.

Carry water and sun protection for the promenade and archaeological site. Check the time before starting an additional attraction, and retain the ship's return instructions offline.
