Cruise ships berth alongside at the Western Docks, using Cruise Terminal 1, Cruise Terminal 2 or WD4. Terminal 1 incorporates the former Dover Marine railway station; Terminal 2 is a separate purpose-built facility. WD4 is a multipurpose berth used for visiting cruise calls, with access towards the Marina Curve and seafront.

The port's cruise brochure gives about 1.4 miles to the town centre, although the actual route depends on the berth. Allow more time for luggage, slower walking or finding the correct entrance.

Taxi ranks are provided at Terminals 1 and 2 and at Dover Priory. Buy the YMS Travel town-and-castle shuttle ticket from the driver; retain your ship's final-return instruction. On turnaround calls, the port describes a more limited station-transfer service, so visitors starting a cruise should not assume the sightseeing circuit is available.

About this port

Dover gives cruise passengers an immediate choice between the town waterfront, the castle above it and the White Cliffs. Staying locally is a practical way to use a few hours without spending much of the call travelling. Dover Priory station has rail links towards London, but the journey also involves transfers between the station and your berth.

For a first visit, make the castle or the cliffs your main outing and leave time for the seafront afterwards. They occupy different sites and neither should be treated as a quick stop directly outside the terminal.

Getting Around

Use the shuttle or a taxi to reduce uphill walking to Dover Castle. Before leaving the terminal, establish whether you are buying transport only or a product that includes any attraction admission. Keep the return stop and berth address with you.

For the White Cliffs, consult the National Trust's directions to the visitor site. The fact that you can see the cliffs from the harbour does not mean the walking trails begin beside the cruise berth. Check the route and choose a turnaround point that leaves time to get back to the port.

If considering travel farther afield, start with the whole journey: port transfer, station wait, travel, sightseeing and the same steps in reverse. A fast train's advertised running time is only one component. For a short call, a local visit leaves considerably more time for the destination itself.

Things to Do

Dover Castle includes the medieval Great Tower and extensive later defences. Give yourself time to move around the site, and use English Heritage's suggested visits to select a realistic route. As checked on 2026-09-07, the operator reports the Operation Dynamo section of the Secret Wartime Tunnels closed for essential maintenance. Check for updates before booking around that particular experience.

The White Cliffs of Dover offer coastal walks and views across the Channel. Follow the National Trust's current route and access advice, wear suitable footwear and keep away from cliff edges. Wind and visibility may make a shorter walk more enjoyable than pushing on to a distant landmark.

The seafront and Marina Curve provide a more flexible outing, particularly from WD4. A waterfront stroll and a meal can also be the final part of a castle visit, leaving you closer to the ship as the return deadline approaches.

Getting back to your ship

For the White Cliffs, consult the National Trust's directions to the visitor site. The fact that you can see the cliffs from the harbour does not mean the walking trails begin beside the cruise berth. Check the route and choose a turnaround point that leaves time to get back to the port.
