Cruise ships berth alongside at Greenock Ocean Terminal, using the dedicated cruise facilities on the waterfront. You normally walk off the ship and through the terminal without tendering. The visitor centre officially opened in August 2023.
The central streets are a short walk away. Allow for the route from your actual gangway and through the terminal building, following the passenger signs out of the operational area.
The Inverclyde Tourist Group provides visitor information at the terminal on most cruise days. Its current FAQ identifies a taxi rank immediately outside. Note the return entrance before leaving.
About this port
Greenock is an arrival point on the Firth of Clyde with two workable approaches to a cruise day: stay locally for waterfront views and museums, or use the railway to Glasgow. The town is close enough to the cruise terminal to begin on foot. Glasgow requires a separate journey, so choose it as the principal outing rather than adding it after a full morning in Greenock.
Local industrial and maritime history gives Greenock a reason to explore in its own right. Keeping the day here also leaves more freedom to change plans or return early if the weather deteriorates.
Getting Around
For rail travel, Greenock Central is the station the tourist group recommends as the nearest and easiest to find on foot. Its access involves slopes and, for some approaches, stairs. Greenock West has a more complicated uphill approach; National Rail confirms that neither platform has step-free access. Passengers with limited mobility should check their intended station and platform with ScotRail before choosing a route.
Use ScotRail's journey planning for current Glasgow Central services and fares, selecting the station you actually intend to use. Save a suitable return and an earlier alternative, then allow additional time to walk back through the port.
A taxi is useful for avoiding hills or reaching a particular attraction. Agree the destination, collection place and return arrangement with the driver. A ship excursion may suit passengers who prefer an organised transfer to sights outside Greenock.
Things to Do
Begin at the terminal's museum. The Wyllieum presents the work of artist George Wyllie, who lived in Inverclyde and worked as a customs officer in Greenock. It is a convenient focus for a local day; consult its visiting information through the terminal facilities page before planning an interior visit.
Explore the Watt Institution. This council-run cultural complex includes the McLean Museum and Art Gallery, James Watt Library and Inverclyde Archives. Its collections offer a way into the area's history beyond the modern cruise waterfront. Check the council's current opening details when combining it with another museum.
Allow time beside the Clyde. A waterfront walk and lunch make a relaxed complement to a museum visit. Keep the walk adaptable rather than committing to a long circuit through the hills above town.
Make Glasgow a focused excursion. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum combines art, natural history and other collections. It needs onward travel from the city-centre station. Consult Glasgow Life's visitor page and choose a few galleries; the return train still has to fit the ship's timetable.

Practical Information
Currency is pound sterling (GBP, £). English is widely spoken. Call 999 or 112 for emergencies.
Bring a rain layer and allow for gradients when planning on foot. Save travel details before leaving the ship. Museum opening days vary: a short visit works better with one confirmed interior stop and a flexible outdoor route.
