Cruise ships normally berth alongside: the port's 2026 transport plan places arrivals at berths 2–4. Cruise Scotland describes anchorage as an overflow option when berths are booked. Its port information also distinguishes the Service Base from Saltburn Pier.
Saltburn Pier has a separate town-shuttle arrangement. For berths 2–4, the designated route for independent passengers is on foot through West Harbour.
Independent coaches collect from the Shore Road lay-bys; taxis and smaller tour vehicles use town car parks or on-street spaces. Allow for the journey back from your drop-off to the ship. Arrange any required gangway or vehicle-boarding assistance with your cruise line before disembarking.
About this port
Invergordon is a small town on the Cromarty Firth and an established gateway to the Highlands. Its murals and central streets suit a modest local visit; Inverness, Culloden and Loch Ness require onward transport. Decide whether you want a town day or one principal excursion before leaving the ship, since adding several inland destinations quickly lengthens the return.
The port is also a working industrial harbour. The position of your ship can make a considerable difference to the first part of the day, even though Invergordon itself is compact.
Getting Around
Invergordon's central streets can be explored on foot. For Inverness, Stagecoach's cruise visitor page currently promotes service 925 from the port area to Inverness Bus Station. Departures are adjusted around cruise operations; use the operator's timetable for your date.
ScotRail also serves Inverness from Invergordon. Check both directions before choosing the train, and include the walk or transfer from your berth to the station. Do not plan around the last possible return when there is no easy alternative.
For an inland tour, agree the route and return deadline with a taxi or excursion operator. If using buses beyond Inverness, check every connection. A service to Inverness does not automatically give you enough time to visit a castle on Loch Ness and catch the ship-bound bus afterwards.
Things to Do
Follow the murals. Invergordon Off the Wall's paintings explore local themes including community volunteers, the distillery pipe band and the heritage of the firth. They provide a reason to slow down in town and look beyond the shops. Use the project information to identify the subjects, and keep a flexible route through the central streets.
Spend time in Inverness. Choose a walk beside the River Ness, time in the centre and lunch if you want a city visit without another long transfer. This is easier to fit around the return bus or train than combining Inverness with several outlying attractions.
Visit Culloden. The National Trust for Scotland manages the battlefield and visitor centre, interpreting the 1746 battle and its aftermath. Allow time for the interpretation as well as the outdoor landscape. Check the Trust's visitor information for current opening and access before arranging your journey.
Choose Loch Ness as the main outing. A lochside visit needs a deliberate transport plan. If Urquhart Castle is included, reserve admission through its operator and confirm that the transport gives you sufficient time there. A shorter route with one meaningful stop is a better fit for a limited call than a checklist of Highland sights.

Currency is pound sterling (GBP, £). English is widely spoken. Call 999 or 112 for emergencies.
Bring a rain layer for exposed sites and save return travel details before departure. Keep your ship's contact number with you. Ask about individual museum or attraction opening days rather than assuming cruise visits guarantee that every local venue is open.
